Chapter 9 by adam17017 adam17017

On the road again?

Yup

As Mark and Sophie walked down to the front desk to drop off the room keys and check out, they held hands and walked silently. Mark walked up to the front desk and dropped everything off, then headed to the car. As they were walked out the front door of the motel, Sophie asked "So, who was this Alice person?" Mark looked at her, silently hoping that Sophie's wildness earlier that day wouldn't be a one time thing.

"Believe it or not, but she's the head cheerleader at USC, and the batgirl for the baseball team"

"Wow! Lucky you, the head cheerleader, _and _the batgirl, you two will be spending a lot of time together"

"Look, Sophie. I won't do anything, I love you. What we did with Steph was nice, but if it's only you for the rest of my life, I'll be happy"

"That's so sweet Mark" Sophie said as she patted his cheek and gave him a kiss, but Mark missed the thoughtful look on her face. When they reached the car, the first thing that the couple noticed was Alex sprawled in the back seat sleeping away. "Well I guess I'm riding shotgun then" Sophie stated the obvious.

"I guess so" Mark replied as he got into the driver's seat. The first three hours of Mark's shift weren't too exciting, as Alex was still sleeping, so Mark couldn't blast any music in consideration of his friend's sleep. As the friend's reached the half way point of their trip to the university, Mark continued to drive toward their target. In the passenger seat, Sophie took Alice's napkin out of her pocket, and looked at it. Mark was focusing on the road, so he didn't see what his girlfriend was so focused on. All that he knew was that she was abnormally quiet, so at a red light, he looked over and put his arm around her shoulders. He looked down towards what she was looking at, and saw the napkin, but not what was on it. He felt up his pockets with his other hand, and didn't feel the napkin that Alice had given him. Mark felt a feeling of anxiety, which was easily explained, but he also felt a feeling of excitement, which he couldn't explain. He looked at the napkin concernedly, and asked her "What's that, Soph?" At that moment, the light turned green, and Mark turned his attention back to the road.

"Is this Alice's number?"

"Yeah" Mark said as he continued to drive "I believe it says Alice there somewhere?" He laughed awkwardly.

"Maybe I should just throw this out the window?"

"I don't think that's a very good idea Soph, she's a nice girl I'm sure, when she's not drunk"

"I'm sure she is.." At that point Alex snatched the napkin from Sophie's grasp and looked at it

"Is this _the _Alice from last night?"

"Oh hey Alex, so you remembered"

"Yeah Mark, I did. I think I'm going to keep this"

"Whoa, Alex. Calm down, think about this, you have Abigail. I think we should throw it out the window as Sophie suggested"

"I said I was keeping it" said Alex. Sophie was about to jump in the backseat and try to wrestle it from him, when Mark held out his arm to prevent him, and gave her a calming look.

"Let him have it. He can explain everything to Abigail himself in that case". The last three hours of Mark's shift were awkward if nothing else, as no one talked, and Mark had to turn on the radio to prevent further erosion of their mood. Finally, when Mark's six hour shift was over, he pulled over into a rest stop for everyone to stretch, use the rest room, and get a few snacks for the last six hours of the day. When everyone was back in the car, Alex was still in the back, Mark was in the passenger seat, and Sophie had driving duty. Both Mark and Alex had their guitars out, and were strumming the chords of the song that Sophie and Alex had written on the drive to the motel. Alex played his bass part, and Sophie sung along for Mark to get an idea of what the song sounded like. He then started to write a part for himself using his electric guitar. "Hey guys, who's getting the solo in this one? Alex, me or both?"

"You can do it Mark. You're a much better soloist than I am anyway."

"Sounds good Alex". Mark went to work on a solo that went well with the rest of the song, and took feedback from the rest of the car as well. Finally when he had his part down pat, all the teens in the car did their parts and played the song, including Mark's electrifying solo. When the song was done, the atmosphere had improved drastically in the car, and for the rest of the drive to the motel, the friends continued to play and write new music. For any cars passing by, all they would hear from Sophie's car would be music and laughter all the way to their destination for the night.

Another motel, another adventure?
