The girls have a move: You chat with Jillian

On Sunday morning, you and Jillian are having your regular computer teleconference. Jillian's tablet is propped up in the not-bedroom room of her little apartment. She's doing yoga on a mat rolled out in front of her fold-out couch while she chats with you.

Jillian holds a pose where her head is turned away.

"So let me get this straight, mom," your daughter says as she holds the pose. "You're going to quit your job so you can be a lesbian? Part-time, that is."

"Yes, Jill," you say.

"Mom, I think you're crazy," she says. "You love that job. You're senior nursing staff. Where do you think you're going to get a better position?"

"This is something I need to do," you tell her. "I've been thinking it over the past few days. It's clear to me that I can't stay in my current job."

Jillian releases the twisted pose and settles into a lotus position, her legs folded. She looks into your face through the camera link.

"Mom, what is it really?" she asks. "I just don't believe it. Tell me the truth. Why?"

The truth tugs at you inside.

"Mom, just tell me," Jill says.

You let it out. "I had a sexual encounter with a nurse I was supervising."

"Oh?" Jill says. "That's not great. Just...that?"

You sigh. "If it had been just that, I would have tried to make it work out." You dip your head. "But from that day, I have had lesbian encounters with a member of a patient's family, two nurses under my supervision, a nursing student, and my supervisor."

"Holy shit, Mom!" Jill says. "I only had three girlfriends in four years of college!"

"I knew if I kept working at the hospital, there would be more," you say. "It's not just me. Things have changed. There's a whole lesbian subculture there I didn't know about. Now that I know, I don't like it. I couldn't fight it. So I couldn't stay."

"You don't say, Mom," Jill says. She blinks. "What does Dad think?"

"Your father is supportive. As long as nothing happens at work. And I bring anyone...that I bring my lovers home," you say.

"Home?" Jill says.

You say, "Your father said we should set up your old room for my guests."

Jill says, "Ho-lee...Yeah. Okay, Mom, you can have my old room. I guess if worse comes to worst for me, I can crash in the TV room or something."

"I'm glad you're not mad at me, Jill," you say.

"Hell, no, Mom, you know I play for both teams," she says. "I'll cheer you on." She looks to the side, then back. "Don't let any of those bitches break your heart or hurt Daddy."

You laugh. "Thank you, Jill. I'm so glad you're on my side."

"Totally, Mom," she says.

A doorbell chimes on Jillian's side of the teleconference.

"Gotta go. I love you, Mom," she says.

"I love you too, Jilly-Willy," you say.

"Let's talk again soon," Jill says. "Bye!"

The teleconference closes with a bloopy chime.
