"I had a rather horrible day at work," you tell him. "I came home early. A terrible administrative meeting."

"Let me hang up my coat and tie, and you can tell me about it," Vincent says.

"Wait, Vincent," you say, taking his arm. "It wasn't just me they gave the bad time to. June Phillips, one of my nurses, was rather distraught. I brought her home from work. She's sleeping in our bedroom."

"Oh, well, then," he says. He sits down at the kitchen table. "So that's why that beastly instant latte tin is out on the counter." Vincent's a corporate auditor. Your husband is a lovely man, a ready lover, a loyal mate, and a thoughtful father, but he's always picking up on strange little details.

"Let me take your coat and tie in," you say. You loosen his tie, remove his suit-jacket, and slip his tie off. You tiptoe into the bedroom and hang up Vincent's clothes in his closet. June is still asleep, naked on the bed, your daughter's borrowed pajama top and bottom tossed aside. You gather the pajamas and tuck them next to June on the bed before you pull up the covers. You take a moment in the master bathroom to run a soapy washcloth over your face before you return to Vincent.

You sit by Vincent at the table and take his hand. He looks up from the mail and puts his other arm round your shoulders.

"Did you want to talk about it, Gloria?" he asks.

"I'm talked out," you say. "Kiss me."

Vincent's lips meet yours. You sigh with relief. His touch feels good. His lips excite you. I'm not a lesbian, you think. Or not just a lesbian.

You let go his hand and stroke Vincent's short, salt-and-pepper hair.
