What happened next?
Jane went on the offensive
Jane reached into a pouch on her thigh and pulled out a road flare. A quick strike against her sword and the torch sprang to life. The young warrior saw her opponent before her. Huddled in the far corner of the sewer chamber was a creature not unlike a squid in appearance. It had a long central body, perhaps one and a half meters in length. The end nearest to Jane split into five meaty lobes. Each lobe was host to a large, black, glassy orb that was probably an eye or some sort. Each was also tipped with a long tentacle, at least three meters long. In the center, where the five lobes met was the gaping mouth, surrounded by savage teeth.
The light and recent injury made the beast wary, but it was quickly recovering. The brief glimpse of the creature was enough to give Jane all the information she needed. She lunged at the monster, eager to strike before she lost the advantage of the blinding light. The creature tried to bring it's tentacles to bear, but was too dazed by the sudden torchlight to move quickly or accurately. Jane managed to reach her sword past the mass of flying tendrils just far enough to pierce one large black eye.
The creature screamed and pushed at Jane with its heavy limbs. The force threw the young woman across the small chamber and into the old brick wall. The impact knocked Jane's breath from her lungs and she slumped down into the muck.
