Chapter 22
by dawan
What is next for which girl?
Wendy's first date with you
You pick up Wendy to take her to the Green River House, a fancy restaurant in Woocottville. You borrowed your uncle's car for the half hour ride. Wendy looks awesome wearing her contacts and having her nine years older sister help her do up her hair. Wendy has gotten closer to her sister in the last six months since Suzy and her husband moved to a house that is just a few doors down from Wendy. Suzy's four year old daughter and two year old son have helped to bring 'Auntie Winnie' out of her shell. Wendy babysits them when their mom is working as a nurse at the Clinic. As a responsible medical professional and older sister (and former party girl), Suzy tells Wendy to bring some condoms with her now that she is dating. At first Wendy says that she is responsible and that you wouldn't do anything risky but then agrees and puts several in her purse.
Lisa Ooglemeyer is disappointed that Wendy is not interested in Jon and his money but remembers you as a nice little boy when the Ooglemeyer's lived next door to you (the other side from Bobby, the Ooglemeyer's moved to a better neighborhood when you and Wendy were in third grade). She can see that Wendy is happy to be going out with you and remembers what great friends you were before the move. Lisa has not seen her serious, mopey, daughter this energetic and cheerful in a long time.
Ten minutes after you pick up Wendy, Lisa gets a call from her old college roommate and good friend, Connie Whyte (Lexie's mother). Connie tells her that Jon is a male whore. He impregnated Lexie and two college girls at a party three weeks ago. She knows this as she is in her minivan outside the Green River City Clinic. She took her daughter there for a pregnancy test and the other girls are there too. Connie tells her friend that Jon said he isn't marrying any of the girls. Matt Smith (Jon's dad) says differently and that Jon has to grow up and Matt's choice is little Alexis (his name for Lexie as he has known Peter Whyte since they were young boys. Lisa is now happy and relieved that her daughter isn't interested in Jon as he is such a player.
As soon as you are out of town you glance over and see that Wendy looks unhappy or nervous. You ask her if anything is wrong and she tells you that this is different than last night and she doesn't feel worthy of a smart former jock like you. You say that you feel unworthy of her as she always has the best grades and her family is affluent and respected. This causes her to laugh nervously and say that her first real date ever will start with mutual undeservedness. You say that you are honored to be her first real date and that she is using a college word as 'undeservedness' comes up as not a word according to the spell check used by sites like chyoa (or maybe it's the antique microsoft software on dawan's laptop). Undeservedness is a word according to Collins online dictionary. (dawan, in addition to being a weird guy, argued his way through college rather than study and use normal words. He has an undefeated record against spell check by using 'look it up' or just wearing the professor down) You and Wendy agree by the time you reach the restaurant that you are both smart enough for the other.
Once seated, you tell Wendy how beautiful she is and that you especially like how her hair is done up. You both talk about your jobs. She works as a teller at her dad's bank. She likes it but isn't sure if she wants to have a career in finance. She plans to go to Woocott Institute next fall. You tell her you have been following your uncle's camera with a camera of your own since you were ten. You aren't sure if you will do still photography, video, mass media, or what. You are planning to follow your uncle's career path. You don't have a college fund and don't see a huge college loan as a smart thing. You are thinking of taking a few classes at G.R.V.C.C., in the fall, maybe in business.
You end the night by walking Wendy to her parents front door. You give her a kiss on the cheek and she hugs you and thanks you for a great time. You don't know it but her parents were watching you with approving eyes. You and Wendy already plan to go to the Homecoming festivities this coming week. You are thinking ahead to the Halloween dance.
What happens at the Halloween dance?
