Chapter 4 by Frank89

What does she do?

Finds some tracks

Just looking up at those giant trees made Shannon feel dizzy. Even as fit as her training had kept her, climbing those without any safety equipment was out of the question. She had salvaged the emergency kit of the pod, but her ship being an older model, it contained only the essentials. A vibroknife, a few food pills - for about two or three days - an empty canteen, a shot to boost her immune system, and a firekit. She administered the shot immediately. It wouldn't make her immune to all diseases, but it was the closest thing she got. She as lucky she landed on a planet with breathable air. She was aware of the knife having a tracker in it, but she also knew it would only be helpful once people would actually be looking for her. It may take days for the agency to discover her absence. She would have to survive till then. She hoped she wouldn't find the ruins of the Federation on this planet before then, like in that age old holoremake.

She paced around the perimeter in search of trails or any sign of civilization, but the best she could find were some small animal tracks leading further into the jungle. The animal making it must have been about the size of a pig. Considering she couldn't see the sun, she decided to follow the small trail. Hopefully, it would lead her to fresh water. All animals needed drink, yes? Her canteen would be able to filter most sources of water, so even a small puddle could suffice.

Along the way, she kept her keen eyes on her surrounding and her hand on her knife. The buzzing and chirping of insects and birds deafened her, but she refused to let some predator sneak up on her. She wouldn't go down without a fight. Soon, she became acutely aware of the hot weather on the planet. Like the jungles Earth 1 used to have, the temperature here must have been above 30 degrees. She unzipped her jumpsuit and rolled up her sleeves, but there was little else she could do to make the heat more bearable. Even if it made her body more accessable to the giant mosquito-like insects, it was a small sarcifice to pay. At least she didn't have to worry about sunburns.

She followed the small tracks, carefully trudging through the dense foliage to avoid any potentially venomous plants. After a few hours of walking, suddenly she faintly heard a distinct sound in the distance. Could it be?

What could it be?
