Listening in to a mother/daughter conversation

I watch Millie walk upstairs, and go into the living room, but instead of sitting there on one of the sofas I quickly sneak back out to the hall way where I stand at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the second floor, hoping that I will be able to listen in to their conversation.

I can hear Millie knocking on Ashley's door, calling out Ashley's name each time she knocks. After a little while I hear Ashley open her door, then I hear it closing again, Millie must have gone into Ashley's room and closed the door I think to myself. I don't go all the way up, but stand on the second to last step of the stairs, and I'm in luck, Ashley's room is right next to the stairs so I can hear their conversation through the wall:

Millie: "I thought we'd agreed you'd be away for two hours as I had told you I needed the house to myself?"

Ashley: "Yes, I am so sorry mom, but I realised I had forgotten my phone as I was driving to the gym, and I did not think you would have started so quickly as I had only been gone for 20 minutes, so I went back for it."

Millie: "Ashley, that is not the truth, don't try to tell me a story like that, you don't ever go anywhere without your phone."

Ashley: "You're right mom, I wanted to see what he looked like, so came back since I was curious."

Millie: "Fine, but you could have knocked or something?"

Ashley: "I know, and again, really sorry. But how did your date go?"

Millie: "As I had planned."

Ashley: "Great! Did me showing up unexpected interrupt things?"
