Seek other alternatives

You know your room-mates are just as broke as you, so you don't consider calling them. For a moment you toy with the idea of calling your landlord back and offering yourself as a payment on the rent, but you dismiss that with a shudder. Too creepy, and he's a thoroughly unattractive man anyway.

Stressing, your mind casts about for other options, a worm of dark dishonesty crawling through your mind. Your new boss is evidently well off, and he's out of the office for at least an hour. Perhaps he keeps cash in his desk.

You fight down the thought, but your desperation keeps bringing it up. You glance at his office door, weighing the chances.

Biting your lip, you go to the door, stepping into the office and pulling it partway shut behind you. You step towards his desk, meaning to look in the drawers, then pause as you see his suit jacket hanging up on a coat rack.

You step towards it and quickly search the pockets, finding his wallet. Pulling it out you look into it, finding a thick sheaf of bills inside. More than enough to get your landlord off your back. Even a few hundred, which would not likely be quickly missed, would buy you some time.

You're holding the wallet, considering what to do when you hear the door close behind you. Whirling in shock you turn to see Mr. Chandler leaning against the door, staring at you.
