Getting to know Jack

"So, where are you headed to," you ask, giving Jack a smile and turning to put one knee on the seat and leaning back against the door.

"Ultimately, down south, but I have to go see my folks first. I told them I'd visit."

"What's down south?"

"Warmer weather," he laughs, looking ruefully at the rain streaming down the windows. "Actually, I've just been drifting for a few months since I got out of school. Had a little money and didn't want to go straight to work. I'm hitching and sleeping in hostels and stuff to stretch my cash."

"Sounds like quite an adventure," you encourage him to continue.

"Sometimes. I meet a lot of people, that's for sure," he grins at you. "Most of them not as pretty as you though."

You smile and blush, flirting at him with your eyes.

"Well, thank you. That's the nicest compliment I've heard today," you say with a smile and a wink.

"It's true. And not many girls as pretty as you would pick up a wet hitch-hiker. They'd probably figure it was too dangerous."

"I thought it was the decent thing to do. After all, Jack, you don't look like a crazed drifter."

He smiles at you, looking at you out of the corners of his eyes, appraising you.

"But that's exactly what I am, Lisa. Exactly what I am."
