Chapter 40 by Shendude
Keep following lunch or go elsewhere?
Let's go check in on Gogo...
Gogo Ejarmen began to wonder if Fate had lent a hand to her finding a job at Ubiquitron Incorporated, if only because Adam's boss, Linda Redstone, was being very generous indeed. Evidently a new housing development was nearing completion, and after a talk with Beth, one of Adam's three wives, it was not going to be put up for sale, but instead would become the community of New Vavavavuma, a new home for the displaced of the original village to make a new life.
Linda also gave Gogo extraordinary telephone privileges, allowing Gogo to learn news both happy and tragic. There were in fact hundreds of survivors from the village, but the way in which they had survived broke Gogo's heart. Typhoon Duminya had struck just as Vavavavuma had been celebrating Queen Diri Day, a peculiar local tradition in which the women and children went away so that the men could provide something surprising for their families when they came back. This year the women and children never got to learn what their men would have given them, because the typhoon caught all the men off guard and killed them outright. Gogo felt relatively blessed that in her own family, all the Ejarmen males had moved elsewhere throughout Mastonesia and the world, but she knew many of the dear friends and neighbors who had passed away and could not begin to guess the emotional toll on the survivors. Nevertheless, the spiritual leader of the village, Mother Superior Tamar Onevekum, sounded strong and serene over the phone, and was deeply touched by the offer to emigrate and found New Vavavavuma.
Gogo sighed heavily, pleased with how the preparations were proceeding, and in a moment of quiet took a private scrapbook out of her lowest desk drawer and idly looked it over, recalling friends and neighbors and a happier time.
Had anyone else looked at that scrapbook, they would have been impressed by the astounding bustiness of the women of Vavavavuma, many of them even exceeding Gogo herself. And yet, by a peculiar miracle, perhaps due to a simple blindness to a fact of life she had grown up with and considered quite normal, or still being deep in the mourning process, Gogo simply never did put together that on the one hand she teasing Adam's bosomania with her casting for the commercial, while on the other hand she was helping to oversee a mass influx of hundreds of women, many of whom just happened to be Adam's fantasy body type. The connection was right there to be made, and yet somehow Gogo simply did not make it ...
