Stay where you are

You take a deep breath, hoping that the cold air will help cool down the anger boiling in your chest. For a moment, it works. You’re glad that Melody is back. You’re happy to see her again. It means a lot that she came to see you.

Then you exhale and all of the anger comes flooding back.

She should have told you. She chose someone else. And now, when she realizes that she made a mistake, she comes crying back to you. Did she expect you to just accept her back with open arms?

You cross your arms.

“No.”

Melody sighs, hugging herself.

“Fine.” She meets your gaze, but then lowers it after seeing the anger in your eyes. “We can just stay out here then.”

You don’t say anything. Melody doesn’t either. The silence drags on and neither of you know how to fill it. Melody shivers again, drawing your gaze.

She’s dressed in little more than a light sweater and jeans—she must have left her jacket inside when she came outside after you. You sigh, suddenly conscious of how you’re practically buried in your jacket. It’s no wonder she’s cold.

Melody finally looks up and catches you looking at her. You almost look away again, feeling a little guilty at getting caught, but the heat in your chest stops you. James broke up with Melody—she isn’t in a relationship anymore, so you haven’t done anything wrong.

And now, since you both are finally looking at each other, it feels like it’s time for someone to say something…
