Chapter 19

Do you keep signing, ask 'Jesus' to read and explain the contract's provisions, or tear up the contract and flee?

Ask Jesus To Explain...

"This contract specifies that if I violate some of it's provisions I forfeit my Immortal Soul..." You say hesitantly.

"Yes, my girlfriend writes them up, and she is fond of using clauses like that: however you will notice there are limits on what can happen with that, it's only for 100 years, and your soul cannot have ownership, use, or possession transferred to a third party." Jesus states.

"And what about these parts that I can't read? Do they just say the same thing in another language like the parts in Latin and English?" You ask suspiciously.

"You can't read that? That's Enochean, how can't you read that?" Jesus says looking alarmed.

"This right here?" You say pointing to one of the sections with the curly and flowing script for which the pen never seems to leave the page.

"Yes, everyone should be able to read that, unless..." Jesus pauses. "How did you get your powers?"

"I touched a dusty statue of Bast." You say, not wanting to go through the whole story AGAIN.

"Ah, I see, you're one of the 'Other People' now." Jesus states. "Don't worry about the Enochean sections, they are as you have stated, duplicates of the English and Latin parts." He continues. "I could read them to you, but since you are no longer of Adam and Eve's get that would make no more sense to you than reading them, just finish signing and initialing and you can take Martha home. Feel free to read everything over if you like: I can wait all day if I have to." He says leaning back in his office chair.

For some reason you feel you can trust him, but you still skim the English portions of each proviso, and finding nothing more serious that what you've already signed you sign or initial in each blank and after another 15 minutes you're done.

"Great!" Jesus says checking the contract, his dark brown eyes alight and long curly black hair bouncing as he repeatedly nods his head. "I will get you a collar, leash, and dog tags for Martha, I just need to know your cell or home phone number, and 20$ for expanses." He says after looking at the last page and seeing everything is in order.

"Its 1-785-555-4612." You inform him, and hand him a 20 out of your purse. He writes the number down and leaves the cubical, then you hear a machine of some kind making a low pitched whine in staccato rhythm, and he comes back with a red nylon leash, red leather dog collar with three tags on it, one with your name and phone number, one with Martha's name and licence number, and a rabies vaccination tag, and hands them to you.

"Come on, let's get Martha and you can go about your business." Jesus declares, leading you back to Martha's cage.

Martha looks slightly hopeful but kinda sad when she sees Jesus come around the corner her yellow and white face turning towards the two of you but her body lying flat and tail un-moving, then leaps for joy when she sees you holding the leash and collar. "She signed, she really SIGNED?! I get to go HOME with someone today?!" She asks with more enthusiasm than you have seen out of her since you met.

"Yes Martha, she did!" Jesus says ruffling Martha's fur and opening the door of the cage. She runs up to you and pounces on you, almost knocking you over, but you tell her 'Down Martha!' and she sit's obediently while you put the collar around her neck. Jesus hands you a grocery bag with the last two giant cans of alphabet soup, "I don't need them any more." He says, and you all start heading for the exit from the giant room.

As you get to the staircase up Jesus remarks: "Well, everything's in order, you should probably go out the back way, it would raise suspicion if you left the empty area with a dog you didn't come in with." and shows the two of you back out of the room, saying 'Goodbye everyone!' and locking up behind you.

Shortly you are back outside, judging from the position of the sun it's been about an hour and a half since you left your apartment and an hour or so since you got to the shelter. You head back to the subway to use your day pass to get home in time for your interview, explaining to Martha that she cannot talk until you are in private, and not at all during the interview later today, in order to draw off suspicion about the 'special room' at the shelter, and she mutely nods.

Is there any trouble on the way back?
