"On my way," said Gary. He clicked off his mobile phone and plugged it into the charger attached to the cigarette lighter of the Super Surf Van. "Ga-reee!" the clerk at the Clinique store greeted him. After having picked up Sonia's beauty supplies many times over the last several months, the girls who worked the store were getting to know him. "Good skin," Tasha said. "Beautiful hair. Bring her." She turned around and set Sonia Rubin's bag on the counter. "Boy at beauty store must bring girlfriend. Where is she?"

"She's at the mall with my sister," Gary said.

"So buy something for her, not bored naughty housewife," Tasha said.

"Tasha!" Gary protested.

"Is true. You should have seen who was picking up her orders last year. At least try sample. Here, peach exfoliator? Lavender neutralizer?" Tasha thrust a handful of samples at Gary. When he looked bewildered, she unfolded a second bag and packed it up with the samples. "For your girlfriend," she said. She put in a folded brochure. "Guide. Now go," she said. "Mustn't keep sugar mama waiting."

"Tasha!!" Gary cried.

She laughed. "What can I do? Is true." She smiled at him.

Gary shrugged, shook his head, took the bags and left. The bell over the door jingled as he went out.

He parked the Super Surf Van in the Rubins' side driveway. They had a corner house with two entrances, and they didn't use the second one themselves. He left Tasha's sample bag on the passenger seat and walked up to the front door. Sonia was waiting, dressed in a white nurse's uniform from cap to shoes. Her curly hair, usually flying every which way, was pulled back into a tight bun. The dress was creased from long being folded up, and too tight across the butt and breasts. "Hi!" she said, and winked. Then she dropped into character. "Gary Menard?" He nodded. "Very good, your appointment is quite soon," she said.
