The atmosphere within the house was tense. No one said anything related to cancer or Sarah's parents. We ate our dinner and Sarah retreated to my room.
"How is Sarah feeling?" my mom asked when she was out of earshot. My dad stared at me, waiting for my response.
"Not good. I can't get her to talk." I told them. I waited around for a bit to let Sarah air out her grievances. When I felt that Sarah had enough alone time, I went to my room. I knocked a couple of times.
"Come in." she meekly responded.
I opened the door and went over to her. I embraced her and she weakly hugged back. "How are you feeling?" I asked.
"Considering that my dad is dying, not good." she responded. I winced at my dumb question. I tried to think of something to say to break the ice.
"we shoul-"
"I'm not going." Sarah interrupted.
"Huh?" I asked, confused.
"I'm not going to California. I want to be here for my dad. I am not gonna leave him on his last years on earth."
I was a bit surprised with Sarah's decision but I nodded. I totally understand her and I agreed with her argument. I sat there, mulling over my decision.
"Please stay with me." Sarah softly whispered. "But I'm not going to force you to stay here. It is your decision. Of course, I want you to stay but I get it if you want to accept the job. You can visit occasionally if you decided to leave. I just want you to know where I stand.
She looked so vulnerable and my heart melted at her words. I need to make a decision soon.
