What's next?
Next morning
The dim morning light filtered through the curtains of Elena’s bedroom, casting long shadows across the floor. Beside her, Julian was fast asleep, completely at peace after the night they had shared.
Back in her own dark room, Allie slowly lifted the heavy chrome helmet off her head. Her actual body was trembling, her heart hammering against her ribs. The neural sync had been so deep, the sensory integration so absolute, that she felt completely intoxicated by the lingering waves of physical pleasure. It had been a historic night. She had experienced everything—the warmth, the intimacy, the absolute thrill of being with her crush—yet her own reputation and her own body remained completely untouched. Only Allie knew the truth. To the rest of the world, it was Elena who had spent the night with Julian.
Allie quickly packed the heavy helmet back into her tote bag, her mind racing with a toxic mix of triumph and adrenaline.
When Elena finally woke up a short while later, she blinked in complete disorientation. Her mind was a total blank from the moment she had turned off her desk lamp the previous evening. She looked over at Julian, her eyes widening in sheer panic and utter confusion as her heart began to race. She had absolutely no memory of how the night had progressed, what she had said, or why she had suddenly acted with such uncharacteristic boldness.
Before Elena could even process her confusion, the real fallout began.
Leo had been sitting awake in his room all night, his suspicions festering. He knew the body-control helmet had been stolen, and hearing the strange, aggressive tone Elena had used on him through the door had locked his theories into place. Someone else had been piloting his sister. He didn't know it was Allie, but he knew Elena was a victim of his father's technology.
But Leo’s silence didn't matter, because the secret was already out.
Allie’s text messages from the night before—where she had sent Elena's embarrassing diary drafts to Chloe and Maya while bragging about the upcoming date—had spread like wildfire. By Sunday morning, group chats across the entire school were exploding with screenshots, rumors, and updates. Classmates who had witnessed Elena's bizarre, high-energy backflip at the plaza were already putting the pieces together.
By the time Monday morning rolled around, the hallways of Westbridge High were completely electric. Everyone was talking about what had happened that night. Julian walked through the front doors looking completely smitten and proud, while Elena walked in looking incredibly pale, defensive, and mortified, unable to explain a single thing to the peers crowding around her locker.
From the end of the hall, Allie stood by her own locker, watching the absolute chaos unfold with a sharp, victorious smirk playing on her lips. She had gotten exactly what she wanted, and Elena was the one paying the price.
Allie slammed her locker shut and smoothly glided down the chaotic hallway. She wore a look of pure, manufactured sympathy on her face as she approached Elena’s locker.
Elena was surrounded by whispering students, her hands trembling as she tried to force her locker open. She looked completely overwhelmed, tears welling in her eyes from the sheer humiliation of the school rumors.
"Oh my god, Elena, are you okay?" Allie cooed, stepping in front of her and gently placing a hand on her shoulder. She managed to look entirely like a worried, protective best friend. "I heard what everyone is saying in the group chats. It's completely awful."
Elena looked up, her eyes wide with desperation. "Allie, I don't know what's happening," she whispered frantically, her voice cracking. "I swear I don't remember anything after turning off my lamp. But Julian thinks... and everyone says I was doing flips in the plaza... I feel like I'm losing my mind!"
Allie leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a highly confidential, comforting whisper. "Hey, look at me. You're not crazy. But honestly, Elena... I saw your private diary pages circulating on Chloe and Maya's phones. Everyone knows about you tripping over the trash can while staring at Julian last year. They think you just finally snapped and went wild to get his attention."
Elena gasped, her face draining of all color. "My... my diary? How did they—"
"Don't worry, I'm on your side," Allie interrupted smoothly, her eyes gleaming with absolute, hidden malice. "But if you want to survive this, you need to lay low and let me handle Julian for you. Just do exactly what I tell you, okay? I'll protect you."
Elena nodded miserably, completely falling into the trap. She had absolutely no idea that the "supportive friend" standing in front of her was the mastermind who had utterly orchestrated her ruin.
Meanwhile, back in the empty girls' locker room, Allie's tote bag was sitting on a bench. Inside it, the stolen chrome body-control helmet lay completely dead, its battery drained to zero percent after the intense, all-night neural simulation.
Marcus, a towering varsity bully who was notorious for skipping classes, kicked the locker room door open. He was in a terrible mood. He had forgotten his motorcycle helmet at home, and the school security guards had already threatened to report him if he tried to ride his chopper off campus without headgear.
Rummaging through the abandoned bags for anything useful, Marcus’s heavy hands ripped open Allie’s tote. His eyes lit up as he pulled out the polished, heavy chrome device. To his untrained eye, the sleek, futuristic design looked exactly like a high-end, custom motorcycle helmet.
"Score," Marcus grunted, a wicked grin spreading across his face. "This thing looks badass."
Wanting to test the fitting before making his escape to the parking lot, Marcus hoisted the heavy chrome structure up and violently slammed it down over his own head.
The moment the interior padding suctioned against his skull, the emergency backup battery inside the sub-dermal node on Elena's neck detected a forced hardware override. Even though the main helmet was uncharged, the safety protocols hard-locked. A blinding, unexpected surge of residual neural energy shot straight into Marcus’s brain.
Marcus blinked. The lockers vanished.
Suddenly, Marcus found himself standing directly in the crowded hallway, looking down at his own small, delicate hands resting on a girl's locker. He looked to the left and saw Allie standing right next to him.
Marcus tried to scream, but the voice that came out was a high-pitched, terrified gasp from Elena's throat. He was completely trapped in Elena's shoes, looking at the chaotic high school hallway through her eyes, while back in the locker room, his own massive body instantly dropped like a stone onto the bench, frozen in a deep standby mode.
