Engagement Party at her Office
Chloe Harper smoothed the hem of her crisp white shift dress one last time in the office restroom mirror, her cheeks already flushed with a mix of excitement and that familiar flutter of nerves. At twenty-two, she still couldn’t quite believe this was her life. The dress hugged her toned figure modestly yet elegantly, falling just above her knees. Simple pearl earrings and a delicate necklace—gifts from Josh—completed the look, along with her favorite white pumps that clicked softly against the tile floor. Her long blonde hair was swept up into a soft chignon, a few tendrils escaping to frame her face. It was supposed to be a casual engagement celebration in the break room before the big wedding next month, but Chloe wanted to feel special. After all, it wasn’t every day your coworkers threw you a party.
The marketing firm where she worked as an assistant coordinator buzzed with its usual Monday morning energy, but today felt different. Whispers and knowing smiles followed her down the hallway. Her boss, Mr. Reynolds, had casually mentioned “a little something in the break room at noon,” but Chloe’s naïve optimism had turned it into something magical in her mind. She clutched a small bouquet of white roses Josh had surprised her with that morning, her engagement ring sparkling under the fluorescent lights.
As she stepped into the break room, a chorus of “Surprise!” erupted. Streamers dangled haphazardly from the ceiling tiles, and a lopsided banner reading “Congratulations Chloe & Josh!” stretched across the vending machines. It was perfectly imperfect—casual, just like her team. A sheet cake from the local bakery sat on the counter, decorated with white icing and tiny plastic rings. Balloons bobbed in the corners, some already losing helium. About fifteen colleagues crowded the space, including her closest work friends, Sarah and Mike, who waved her over with plastic cups of sparkling cider.
“Oh my gosh, you guys!” Chloe’s voice came out in a delighted squeak, her blue eyes wide. She set the roses down and accepted hugs, her white pumps nearly tripping over a rogue balloon string. Classic Chloe. She caught herself on the edge of the table, laughing it off as everyone chuckled warmly. “I had no idea it was going to be this nice!”
Sarah, ever the organizer, handed her a plate with an oversized slice of cake. “We couldn’t let you get married without a proper send-off. Even if it’s just store-bought sparkling stuff and whatever Mike could blow up with his lungs.” Mike shrugged good-naturedly, his tie already loosened.
Chloe took a bite of cake, the sweetness matching her mood. Conversations flowed easily—stories from past campaigns, teasing about her upcoming honeymoon in the mountains, and gentle ribbing about how Josh had somehow tamed her legendary clumsiness. “Remember the time you spilled coffee on the entire client deck?” someone called out. Chloe blushed but grinned. “Hey, they signed anyway!”
Midway through, Josh arrived, still in his button-down from his own office across town. His athletic build filled the doorway, short brown hair neatly styled, that easy smile lighting up his face when he spotted her. He crossed the room in three strides and kissed her cheek. “You look stunning, babe. Way too fancy for a break room.”
She leaned into him, inhaling his familiar cologne. “I wanted to look like a fiancée, not just the girl who color-codes spreadsheets.”
The group insisted on photos. Chloe posed beside the cake, Josh’s arm around her waist, her white dress a bright contrast to the mundane office surroundings. Then came the presents. The team had pooled together for something thoughtful rather than flashy. Sarah presented a beautifully wrapped box while everyone gathered closer.
“Open it!” they urged.
Chloe’s fingers trembled slightly with excitement as she untied the ribbon. Inside was a custom photo book, its cover embossed with their initials. Page after page captured moments from her time at the firm—team outings, late-night deadlines turned into pizza parties, and even a candid shot of her tripping during last year’s holiday party, everyone laughing with her instead of at her. Tucked in the back was a gift certificate for a couples’ spa day and a handwritten card signed by the entire department.
Tears pricked her eyes. “This is… too much. You guys are the best.” Her voice wavered, that gentle heart of hers overflowing. She hugged Sarah tightly, then Mike, then half the room. In her enthusiasm, she bumped the cake stand. A dollop of icing flew off and landed squarely on the toe of her white pump.
Laughter erupted again. Josh knelt immediately, napkin in hand, wiping it away with a grin. “There she is. My beautiful disaster.”
Chloe covered her face, peeking through her fingers. “Why does this always happen to me? On my engagement day!”
“Because we love you for it,” Sarah said, squeezing her shoulder. “Naïve, kind, and totally us. Josh is a lucky guy.”
The party wound down with more cake and stories. Josh shared how they’d met in college—Chloe spilling her books in the library, him helping pick them up. “I knew then she was special. Still is.” Chloe nestled against him, her chignon loosening slightly, a few more strands framing her glowing face.
As colleagues filtered back to their desks with promises to attend the wedding, Chloe lingered, admiring the photo book. The break room returned to its ordinary state—coffee stains on the counter, humming fridge—but for her, it felt enchanted.
