Harsh Truth
Sarah’s POV
Sarah sat in the small conference room at the precinct, her hands clenched tightly in her lap. Across from her sat her captain and the lieutenant from internal affairs. The air felt heavy.
“Detective Kline,” the captain said, his voice tired. “We have been over this. The club investigation has gone nowhere for months. You have no solid evidence, no bodies, nothing that holds up in court. It is time to let it go.”
Sarah kept her voice steady. “Sir, I have multiple missing persons reports that all trace back to that same circle of clubs. The patterns are too consistent to ignore.”
The lieutenant leaned forward. “Sarah, we all know why you are so invested. Your sister disappeared nine years ago. We understand the personal connection. But you cannot keep chasing ghosts. It is affecting your work. Other cases are being neglected.”
Sarah felt the words like a slap. “This is not only about my sister anymore. It is about stopping something that is still happening.”
The captain sighed. “Effective immediately, you are suspended. Paid leave, for now. Use the time to clear your head. If you cannot drop this obsession, we will have to consider more permanent measures. Go home, Sarah. Stop looking for your sister in every missing person file.”
Sarah stood up slowly, her throat tight. She did not argue. She simply nodded, collected her things, and walked out of the building with her head high even though her chest felt like it was caving in.
Nine years. Nine years of dead ends and false leads. And now even her own department had given up on her.
Alex’s POV
Rebecca was exactly as Emily had described. Pretty, ambitious, and clearly stressed about her upcoming wedding. Alex had bumped into her “by chance” at a coffee shop near his old office. One casual conversation turned into lunch. Lunch turned into drinks two nights later.
By the end of the third meeting, Rebecca was laughing and leaning in close.
“I needed this,” she admitted. “My fiancé is always working. I feel like I am planning this whole wedding alone.”
Alex smiled. “I know a place that helps people unwind. Private, exclusive. Very different vibe from normal clubs. You should come with me one night. No pressure. Just good music and good company.”
Rebecca hesitated for only a moment before nodding. “Okay. Why not? I could use a night out.”
Alex arranged everything. He picked her up and drove her to the club. Emily had already prepared the private suite. Soft lighting, expensive drinks, and two of the group’s most skilled recruiters waiting inside.
When Rebecca stepped through the door, she looked around with wide eyes. “This place is… intense.”
Alex placed a hand lightly on her lower back. “Just relax. You are going to love it here.”
He stayed long enough to see the first drink placed in her hand and the first soft, hypnotic video playing on the large screen in the suite. Then he excused himself, promising to be back soon.
As he walked out of the club, his phone buzzed with a message from Emily.
Emily: Good work. She is already responding well. You will be rewarded.
Sarah at Alex’s House – Night
It was past midnight when the knock came at Alex’s door.
He opened it to find Sarah standing there in jeans and a simple jacket, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She looked nothing like the confident, flirty woman he had been seeing.
“Sarah? What happened?”
She stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. The moment the door closed she broke.
“I am a detective, Alex,” she said, her voice cracking. “I have been investigating the club and places like it for months. My bosses just suspended me today. They told me to stop wasting time. That I cannot keep being obsessed with my sister who disappeared nine years ago.”
She wiped her eyes roughly. “I joined the force because of her. I have been trying to find out what happened to her ever since. And now they want me to just… give up.”
She looked at him, vulnerable and raw.
“I cannot give up, Alex. I need to find my sister. Or at least find out what happened to her. I am sorry I dragged you into this, but I really like you. I needed to see you tonight.”
She stepped closer and rested her forehead against his chest.
“I do not know what to do anymore.”
Alex wrapped his arms around her, feeling the weight of her tears soaking into his shirt.
Outside, the night was quiet.
