What's next?
Room Enough
Elaine stood in the doorway of Roy's apartment for a moment longer than necessary, taking it in.
It wasn't the first time she'd been there. The details of her other visits felt hazy in her memory, but it felt different tonight. Warmer, somehow. More like a home than it ever had before.
A small smile touched her lips at the thought as she stepped inside. The familiar scent of something savoury drifted from the kitchen, rich and inviting, layered with spices she couldn't quite name but already appreciated.
"Elaine?" Michelle's voice carried from down the hall. "You made it!"
"I did," Elaine called back, smoothing a hand over the front of her dress before moving further in. "And it smells wonderful."
She meant that.
Michelle appeared a moment later, bright and glowing in a way that had nothing to do with the overhead lighting. The young woman had clearly put effort into the evening. A soft, fitted dress hugged her frame, light and flowing, paired with a simple apron tied neatly at the waist. Her hair had been styled, makeup done just enough to highlight her features without overwhelming them.

Domestic.
Comfortable.
Beautiful.
Elaine's smile deepened, something warm settling in her chest. "You look lovely."
Michelle beamed. "Thanks. I wanted to make it nice tonight, you know?"
"I can see that."
And she could. The apartment reflected it. Everything was tidy, thoughtfully arranged. Not staged, exactly, but cared for. Lived in. The kind of space that welcomed you in and asked you to stay a while.
Elaine moved toward the kitchen, her heels clicking softly against the floor. Her own outfit suddenly felt... deliberate. A navy dress, simple but elegant, fitted just enough to flatter without trying too hard. Pearls at her neck. Hair brushed out, falling in soft waves with those familiar streaks of white catching the light.

She wouldn't normally dress like this for dinner with a friend. But Michelle wasn't just a friend.
"Can I help with anything?" she asked, stepping into the kitchen.
Michelle shook her head quickly. "No, no, I've got it. You just sit. Everything's basically done."
Elaine hesitated for half a second, then nodded. "Alright. But I expect to at least set the table."
"That I will allow," Michelle said with a grin.
A quiet laugh slipped out of Elaine as she reached for the plates. It felt easy. That was the thing. There was no awkwardness. No tension over what they were to each other, or what Roy was to both of them. It simply worked. They moved around each other comfortably, passing dishes, adjusting placements, small touches of coordination that didn't need to be spoken aloud. By the time they sat down, everything was ready.
Elaine took her first bite and closed her eyes briefly.
"Oh," she said softly. "Michelle, this is incredible."
Michelle lit up immediately. "Really?"
"Truly. Where did you learn this?"
"My mom," she said, almost automatically.
The word lingered. Just for a second. Michelle didn't stop smiling, but something in it shifted, barely noticeable, unless you were looking for it. And Elaine was.
"She taught me a lot," Michelle added, a little more casually than before, like she was smoothing over the moment as she spoke.
"It shows," Elaine said gently. "Have you heard from her since...?"
"No," Michelle replied quickly. "I blocked her. After the other day, after she... I don't want to talk to her right now."
Michelle nodded, focusing on her plate for a beat longer than necessary before taking another bite. The conversation didn't stop. It just adjusted. No need to dig into it again. They both already knew. The sharp edges of that story had been shared, felt, acknowledged. Tonight didn't need to reopen them.
Instead, Michelle leaned forward slightly, energy picking back up.
"I've been trying to get better at this," she said. "Cooking, I mean. Like, not just throwing something together after work, but actually making something good."
Elaine smiled. "You've succeeded."
"I like it," Michelle admitted. "It's... I don't know. It feels nice. Coming home and doing something like this. For Roy, yeah, but for me, too."
Home. That word. This place. Roy. Elaine felt it settle somewhere deeper, sinking into her like a longing.
"It suits you," she said, and meant it.
And it did. Even after a long day (two shifts, no less), Michelle had come home, changed, put effort into her appearance, and created something warm, welcoming, intentional. She'd taken care of her home, their dinner, and her guest. She had found a new rhythm and pride in living with her boyfriend, in being close to Roy and taking care of him.
Elaine watched her for a moment longer than she meant to.
Roy and Michelle belonged together.
The thought came easily. Not painful. Not sharp. Just true. And still...
A small, quiet part of her wished she could be here like this. Not visiting. Not leaving at the end of the night. Just part of it. Close to him, next to him. A part of his home.
The house she'd shared with Mark echoed differently these days. Too large. Too quiet. Roy's presence had helped, filled some of that space, but it was still, at the end of the day, empty.
There was room. Plenty of room. The idea slipped in gently. What if she opened her home to all of them, brought everyone under one roof. Would that be too much? Would Michelle feel like Elaine was imposing herself on a special part of their relationship? Would the easy rhythm that Michelle had found be difficult to find if Elaine was there every day? And what about Zara? Would she feel excluded?
She hadn't met her yet. Another piece of Roy's life, existing just out of reach. Elaine assumed she was lovely. He had good taste. More importantly, he had a good heart.
Still, the question lingered. Would she feel left out? Would she want to move in as well?
Elaine exhaled softly, bringing herself back to the present. One step at a time. Across the table, Michelle was talking about the weekend now.
"I think I'm going to try and pick up an extra shift," she was saying. "I missed some hours earlier this week, so it'd be good to make it up."
"That sounds sensible," Elaine said, nodding.
"But," Michelle added with a small grin, "I also kind of want to just stay in. Like... I don't know. Enjoy waking up with Roy, being close to him."
"You should," Elaine said with a grin. "You two deserve it. Honestly? Waking up next to him is one of the best feelings in the world."
Michelle smiled back at her.
"Right?"
And something clicked into place. Simple. Obvious.
"Would you..." Elaine hesitated, just for a second. "Would you want to do this again?"
Michelle blinked. "This?"
"Dinner," Elaine clarified, a little more quickly than she intended. "Not..." She let out a small laugh. "Not as a replacement for anything. Just... when Roy's out, or busy. It seems a shame for us both to spend the evening alone. We could make this a regular thing."
Michelle considered that. Then her face lit up.
"Yeah," she said. "Yeah, I'd like that."
Relief, and something warmer, spread through Elaine's chest.
"Good."
They smiled at each other across the table. Easy. Natural. And beneath it, quiet but persistent, the thought returned. If this worked, if they kept doing this, then maybe, one day, she wouldn't have to go home at the end.
Elaine's heart beat just a little faster. Waking up in a full house. Footsteps in the morning. Voices in the kitchen. Roy there, not just visiting, but there.
Her hand tightened slightly around her glass.
Her man. Her lover.
Her boyfriend.
