Chapter 4 by Creature0909

What’s Shadow’s Adventure?

Trapped in Twilight (Creature0909)

Silent on his favorite hill, Shadow gazed out at the distant city, lost in quiet contemplation. He closed his eyes and reflected on his life now that Black Doom was gone. Things had been peaceful with G.U.N., and though he'd never admit it aloud, he'd thoroughly enjoyed the Crossworlds Grand Prix. It was the first time in ages he'd felt truly relaxed, especially when he crushed Metal Sonic under the monster truck mode of his car—that rush of satisfaction still lingered. The event had been fiercely competitive, with surprises that earned his respect. The first cup didn't go to the usual frontrunners; Amy Rose claimed victory, and while Sonic and he took second, Shadow admired her fierce determination. Later, Silver stunned everyone by winning an entire Grand Prix, leaving Sonic and him in second and third. After Silver's triumph, Shadow caught Blaze hugging him with unbridled joy, a clear spark of romance. He chuckled inwardly but fell silent, knowing such warmth was beyond his reach.

But his biggest surprise hit during the Pumpkin Grand Prix. It started neck-and-neck between Sonic and him in the Crystal Mine, as always. Then, an unexpected rival swooped in: Rouge the Bat, his longtime partner and one of his few true friends, piloting her sleek new Lip Spyder. She dominated every race in the Pumpkin Cup, leveraging her sharp wits—time traps and all—while exploiting the rivalry between Sonic and him to pull ahead. At the podium, Shadow accepted his second-place medal as Rouge claimed gold, her eyes lighting up at the jewel embedded in its center. He approached her with a rare compliment: "Not bad." She responded with a simple "Thank you" and pulled him into a hug. Her body pressed close, warm and soft against his, her wings fluttering slightly as her scent— a mix of adrenaline and subtle perfume—filled his senses. It was the first warmth he'd felt in years. She pulled back with an embarrassed blush, apologizing for her excitement, but Shadow brushed it off, the unexpected contact stirring something deep within him.

The Grand Prix wrapped up as expected, all ties broken by those surprise wins from Amy, Silver, and Rouge. Sonic and Shadow faced off in the Secret Cup, Do Don Pa's grand finale. It was a brutal duel, with wisps and items flying as they tore up the track. They owned the lead until the final stretch. Shadow thought he'd set the perfect trap, pinning Sonic just shy of the finish. But Sonic surged forward with a perfectly timed boost, rocketing past to claim victory. The Blue Hedgehog had won it all. Shadow wasn't shocked, even if the Ultimate Life Form hated to lose.

As fun as the Grand Prix had been—more than he'd admit—now, with no missions from G.U.N. and the races behind him, Shadow couldn't avoid the shadow of his past. It defined him, no matter how hard he tried to outrun it. Thoughts drifted to the ARK in its prime: the labs, the containment chambers, Abe's wary glances, Gerald's proud smiles at his progress. And Maria... He halted there. Maria. Against his will, he was pulled back fifty years, to the ARK, as vivid as yesterday.

Maria and Shadow stood overlooking Earth, her favorite view. She looked unusually glum, staring at the blue planet below. Concerned, Shadow stepped closer. "Is something wrong, Maria? Is your illness worsening?" he asked, his voice soft for his closest friend.

She turned to him and shook her head. "No, it's just... Grandfather brought movies on the last supply run. One got me thinking about something I haven't in ages, with all the chaos of my condition and the endless tests. You've been such a welcome distraction."

The gentle soul of the Robotnik family gazed out at Earth. Shadow drew nearer. "What is it?" he prompted curiously. "Telling me might ease your mind."

To her dearest friend, Maria sighed deeply. "It was about a knight and a princess, inseparable companions. They shared everything; he was her shield, her unwavering protector against every threat." She glanced at Shadow to check if he followed—he always did; she couldn't ask for a better listener. "But an envious witch cursed the princess, jealous of her status, her people's adoration, and her bond with the knight. Warts bloomed on her skin, her body shrank, ears stretched long, and her flesh turned a sickly green—she'd become a goblin! Overwhelmed, she fled to the Forbidden Woods, blind to the pain she caused her family, her kingdom, and her knight." Maria coughed suddenly, raising a hand to her chest. Shadow steadied her gently to the floor, her breathing ragged. "Sorry, I got carried away," she panted, her hand trembling in his warm grasp. "Shadow?"

Seated beside her, Shadow nodded for her to continue, drawing a small smile from Maria. "The king, fearing the woods' perils, grieved his lost daughter, presuming her dead after months vanished. But the knight held faith and ventured into the shadows to search. A thief stole his sword, mocking him: why pursue the princess, now just a foul goblin? Defiantly, the knight declared his love transcended appearances! Stunned, the thief smiled faintly, directing him onward and trailing behind, touched by such devotion. At the princess's hideout, the knight knew her instantly, embracing her in fierce relief as she clung back, tears mixing with his. He confessed his love, but she... didn't return it romantically." Shadow's eyes widened in surprise. "Not that she lacked love for him—like a brother, not a lover. In her isolation, she'd found another who cherished her fully, curse and all. The knight's heart shattered, realizing she'd never return."

But Maria smiled at Shadow. "Don't fret; the knight's story didn't end in sorrow. The thief, seeing his devastation, felt her own heart stir. She shadowed him through the woods and beyond the kingdom, risking everything despite her outlaw life. Eventually, she coaxed tears from him—something he thought impossible. Selfish at first, she braved capture to console him. As twilight fell, the knight discovered feelings for her. They confessed their love, and with his clever persuasion, she was pardoned, they wed, and lived blissfully ever after."

"Before my illness," she confided to Shadow, her voice soft, "there was a boy I cared for deeply. But I've been trapped here so long; he's surely moved on." She met Shadow's gaze. "When we return to Earth, do you think I'll find my thief?

Before Shadow could recall his response, a comm device buzzed, snapping him from the reverie. He straightened, voice sharp: "Shadow here. Go ahead." It was Commander Tower—a decent sort. But his words ignited fury: Infinite was back
