What's next?
Call your parents on the way home to share the engagement news with them
The city lights blur past the car windows as David navigates through London's evening traffic. You're both still floating on the high of your engagement, his free hand constantly finding yours, fingers brushing against the new ring that catches every passing streetlight. The emerald stone winks at you like a secret between lovers.
"I should call my parents," you say suddenly, the words tumbling out before you even realize what you're saying. The neural integration supplies memories instantly—your mother's soft Irish lilt, your father's hearty laugh, their small cottage in Cork with its climbing roses and view of the sea.
David smiles. "They're going to be over the moon. Your mum's been dropping hints about grandchildren since Christmas."
You dial with slightly trembling fingers, putting the phone on speaker so David can hear. After three rings, a warm, melodic voice answers. "Mia, love! We were just talkin' about you!"
"Hi, Mum," you say, your own accent becoming noticeably stronger in response to hers—a detail that makes David smile beside you. "Is Dad there too? I've got news and I want you both to hear it."
"Sean! SEAN! It's our Mia on the phone—she says she's got news!" There's a rustling, then a deeper voice joins in.
"Hello, princess," your father says, his voice gruff with affection. "What's this big news then? You're not pregnant, are you?"
"Dad!" you gasp, feeling your cheeks flush as David chuckles beside you.
"Well, it's not that," you continue, drawing out the moment. "But... David proposed tonight! We're engaged!"
The explosion of joy that erupts from the phone is so loud that David winces, though his grin remains fixed in place. Your mother's happy sobs mix with your father's booming congratulations.
"Oh, my darling girl!" your mother cries. "We knew it! Didn't we say, Sean? When she brought him home at Easter, I said to your father, 'That man's going to be our son-in-law before the year is out.'"
The memory fills in seamlessly—David meeting your parents for the first time, how nervous he'd been, how your father had taken him fishing and returned declaring him "a good lad with sense about him."
"The ring, Mia! Tell me about the ring!" your mother demands.
"It's vintage," you reply, gazing at the emerald. "An emerald with diamond accents, set in white gold. It's absolutely perfect."
"Just like my girl deserves," your father says warmly. "David, are you there, son?"
"Yes, sir," David answers, his voice taking on that respectful tone you've noticed he uses with your father.
"You've made us very happy today," your father says simply. "You take care of our Mia."
"I will, sir. Always."
Your mother cuts back in, already buzzing with wedding plans. "When are you thinking? Spring weddings are lovely, but summer would give everyone time to travel. Your cousins in Boston will need plenty of notice—"
"Mum," you laugh, "we've been engaged for less than two hours!"
"It's never too early to start planning, love," she insists. "Oh! We should come to London soon! Next weekend? We could start looking at venues—"
"That sounds great," you say, catching David's amused glance. "But we're just pulling up to the flat now. Can I call you tomorrow with more details?"
After several more minutes of excited chatter and congratulations, you finally end the call as David parks outside your building. The conversation has left you glowing, these fabricated yet completely real-feeling memories of your family bringing a warmth that settles deep in your chest.
"They're amazing," David says, leaning over to kiss you softly. "Your mum's already planning our entire wedding, isn't she?"
"And the christening for our first three children," you laugh. "You know how she gets."
He kisses you again, deeper this time, one hand sliding into your hair while the other traces your collarbone, sending shivers down your spine. "Let's go upstairs," he murmurs against your lips. "I want to properly celebrate with my fiancée."
The word 'fiancée' triggers something molten in your core, desire pooling between your thighs as you nod eagerly.
