Economic boom and suburban growth

Post-war prosperity: Following World War II, the economy experienced a significant boom, often called the "Golden Age of American Capitalism".

GI Bill: The GI Bill helped veterans with low-interest mortgages, fueling a massive demand for housing and leading to a surge in suburban development.

Consumerism: The period saw a rise in consumer spending as Americans, who had endured years of Depression and rationing, now had more access to goods like cars, appliances, and other new technologies.

"Baby Boom": A significant increase in birth rates began, with roughly 4 million babies born each year, and the "nuclear family" became a cultural ideal.

Cold War and Red Scare: The Cold War with the Soviet Union intensified fears of communism, leading to the McCarthy era, which saw widespread paranoia, loyalty oaths, and investigations into supposed communist sympathizers.

Korean War: The Korean War began in 1950, further escalating Cold War tensions and marking a major military commitment for the US.

Civil Rights Movement: The decade also saw the growing momentum of the Civil Rights Movement, as African Americans organized to combat segregation and discrimination.

Supreme Court rulings: The Supreme Court's landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 declared "separate but equal" unconstitutional, though resistance in the South was strong.
