On July 17, 1955, Dickmeland opened its gates in Analheim—and promptly stumbled into legend. Candace Uriel Dickme had promised “the horniest place on Earth,” but what she delivered that first day was equal parts pleasure and pain.

The opening was supposed to be an exclusive press event, with just 6,900 invited guests. Instead, thanks to counterfeit tickets, more than 30,000 people poured in. Rides misbehaved too. The Longhorne riverboat nearly tipped when hundreds of visitors rushed to one side, while several experiences simply failed to open. Parking was a nightmare, traffic jammed for miles, and reporters on the ground dubbed it “Dirty Sunday.”

Yet on live television, the event looked like a dream. Millions watched BBW’s broadcast, with Bart Bedwetter, Donald Pagan, and Bob Cummings hosting.
