Chapter 3 by Daemony Daemony

Bad Behavior

The laughter had died down, but the tension still hung in the air. Carol felt it in her chest, in her fingertips, in the soles of her bare feet pressing into the cool grass. The voices of the boys and girls sounded a little too loud, a little too shrill.

“He'll confess later.”

How had she come up with that? She had surprised herself with that last sentence. And then everyone had laughed. Even Lena, the quiet one. And for a moment, all eyes were on her—not because she was the adult, or the chaperone, or the one who made sure everyone put on sunscreen and had breakfast in the morning—but because she had said something no one else would have dared to say.

And she liked that.

The wine was still in her blood. Her skin tingled. She was sweating, not from the fire anymore, but from excitement. From the feeling of having crossed a line. She felt like a little girl who had stolen candy and denied everything, even though her fingertips were still sticky.

She turned slightly, casually—as if just changing her position—but her gaze slid to the tree line, where night swallowed the shadows. And yes.

He was there.

He wasn't part of the circle. But he wasn't standing completely outside it either. Just a few meters away, near the path to the road they had come from. His arms were crossed, his posture casual, but too upright to be truly relaxed. He was watching.

Maybe he hadn't heard everything from that distance, hadn't understood the words. Maybe.

Carol looked back at the fire. The others were distracted again—Noah had resumed playing guitar, worse than ever. Tasha was filming him with her cell phone and giggling. Marcus and Lena were playfully arguing about something.

No one was paying attention to Carol. But she wanted to be noticed. She had been a devoted mother, loving wife, and exemplary parent-teacher association member for so long. Now she finally wanted to be herself. And be seen.

Yes, it was pure recklessness. But only those without sin should cast the first stone. Let Father George judge her. He couldn't condemn her.

She stood up.

At first, no one noticed—not until she slowly, like a sleepwalker, moved away from the glow of the fire. Her feet were bare, the grass cool and soft.

The wine made her brave. Or maybe it just brought out something that had been lying dormant inside her for years. She didn't go far—just to the flat rock near the fire pit that the group had used as a makeshift table. She climbed onto it.

Not quickly. Not hastily. Calmly. That was what made it so strange and drew everyone's attention to her.

Tasha was the first to ask. “Carol? What are you doing?”

Carol smiled. Innocently. Or at least she tried to. “Since the mood seems to be dying, I'll provide some entertainment.”

“Are you drunk?” Marcus asked, raising his eyebrows.

“Just drunk on freedom,” she said, spreading her arms like a mocking caricature of a saint.

And then—before she could think too long, before her reason could catch up with her—she lifted the hem of her tank top. And pulled it up.

First the soft curve of her belly. Her belly button. The mounds of her breasts, round and heavy. No bra. Nothing under her shirt except heat and daring.

And then it was over her head. She twirled it around like a trophy and let it fly away in a high arc.

Everyone stared at her in disbelief.

But more importantly, he saw her.

The group was stunned. Not really shocked—more confused. Noah looked like he didn't know whether to applaud or look away. Tasha blinked twice and then laughed incredulously. Lena just stared. Marcus whistled softly. “Praise the Lord,” he muttered.

Carol stepped down from the rock with the bearing of a priestess who had performed a ritual.

And she felt his gaze. From the darkness beyond the flames. From the man standing outside the circle. From the one who had seen everything. Her skin now burned hotter than the fire. But she wasn't ashamed.

Not yet.
