Chapter 22 by Ebanu8 Ebanu8

What happens next?

Eothai learns of Espers

One morning, as Eothai was watching TV and boredly browsing channels, he chanced upon a magic show, where magicians would perform tricks to dazzle and wow the audience. Eothai felt the urge to scoff; exactly how can the Humans of this magic-less Earth hope to perform dazzling magic? He'd rather find one of countless travelling Elven troupes for an entertaining show.

"And now, we have our resident esper come to perform a most dazzling magic trick!" The speaker on TV announced.

A man dressed in a formal suit, wearing white gloves and a bowler hat, stepped onto the stage, bowing to a clapping audience.

Well... I don't have much to do right now, might as well see what passes for parlour tricks here in Japan.

He sees the magician pull out a common spoon, and before the audience, he rubs a particular spot on the stem just below the bowl of the spoon with a few circular motions. Then, holding it upright, he uses the palm of his hand to press the bowl back, and-

-It bent backwards with virtually no effort.

"...What?"

Eothai could not detect any magic used in this 'spell', nor was the spoon itself tampered. Which left only one possible answer.

"What trick did he use? How did he get that spoon to bend without superhuman strength?" He muttered to himself, biting his thumb, "I refuse to lose to these Humans! I'll show them that I can master this trick as well as anyone!"

Sadly, despite his best efforts and repeatedly watching several such demonstrations on Youtube, Eothai could not crack the code. All his efforts rewarded him with were a pile of broken and awkwardly bent spoons. He bit his lip and cursed to himself in frustration.

"Damn it, damn it!" He whined, "How is such a simple trick so difficult to perform!?"

Thankfully, with his magic he restored the spoons back to their original position, but he was left unsatisfied.

"Come to think of it, Elwur is more familiar with the ways of this world than me. Yes, perhaps he has the answer!"

Struck by inspiration, Eothai made a quick teleport to Elwur's house.

"No."

"Please, just hear me out-"

"Get lost."

Eothai refused to back down, but he had to admit it was disheartening to see Elwur just flat out denying him entry to the house upon seeing him.

"I'm not here to cause you trouble or challenge you to a duel, I swear to the Gods!" Eothai pleaded, "I just need your help with a certain problem of mine, alright? If you help me solve it, I promise I'll be out of your hair."

Elwur stared and growled at Eothai, the Dark Elf Assassin having little reason to entertain Eothai's silly request. With both you and Yutsuko away, Elwur was left to handle the household chores, and to act as security against unwelcome intruders.

Elwur heaved a sigh, and said, "Five minutes, no more."

"Thank you, Elwur!" Eothai exclaimed in relief.

Elwur cocked his head inside, and Eothai quickly obliged. After a few seconds of explaining himself, Elwur sighed and scratched his head.

"How very expected of you," He said, "Hand it here."

Eothai obliged and passed Elwur a spoon to use.

"What they actually do is stimulate this specific part of the spoon, where the material is thinnest. Then once you rub it for a full ten seconds, use the palm of your hand and apply only the gentlest ****, and pull your hand in the direction where the outer part of the spoon's bowl faces outward."

Eothai did as Elwur asked, and the moment he achieved the trick, he exclaimed in joy.

"I did it! I really did it!"

"Must you be so driven to compete with Humans?" Elwur questioned.

"Well, I... I guess I just couldn't stand losing to them," Eothai admitted.

"Humans have their own strengths, we Elves have ours. We simply work to make the best use of both our strengths and weaknesses to our advantage. In that regard, you need not fully imitate what Humans do."

Eothai sighed in defeat, a mirthless smile on his face.

"Alright, you have me," He admitted, "I suppose being too obssessed over losing is a terrible habit to have. That doesn't mean I'm just going to throw in the towel, though."

"As you wish," Elwur shrugged.

"Anyway, thanks for your help. As promised, I'm off."

And with that, Eothai teleported out of the home, leaving Elwur alone.

He scoffed and laughed to himself.

"And people wonder why we Elves tend to be known as sore losers..."
