Chapter 3 by Spotlesslurker Spotlesslurker

Carrer Move

A few days later, Meg sat at her desk, poring over the details of a new case file. The fluorescent lights hummed softly overhead as she flipped through page after page of police reports, witness statements, and evidence logs. This wasn't just any case - it had the potential to be a game-changer for the firm.

The client was Marcus Delgado, a high-profile businessman accused of running a sophisticated **** trafficking operation and grand theft auto ring. The charges were serious: multiple counts of possession with intent to distribute, money laundering, and grand larceny. If convicted, Delgado was looking at decades behind bars.

But there was more at stake than just one man's freedom. Defending Delgado successfully would put their firm on the map in a big way. The case had already garnered significant media attention, with Delgado's name splashed across the front pages of newspapers and dominating the local news cycles. A win here would mean an influx of high-paying, high-profile clients.

Meg's eyes widened as she reviewed the potential payout. The retainer alone was staggering, more money than she'd seen in her entire career. And if they managed to get Delgado acquitted or even a reduced sentence, the bonus would be astronomical. It was the kind of payday that could set her up for life, opening doors she'd only dreamed of.

As she delved deeper into the case files, Meg felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. The evidence against Delgado was substantial. Surveillance photos showed him meeting with known **** dealers. Financial records revealed a complex web of shell companies and offshore accounts. And then there were the cars - a warehouse full of luxury vehicles with altered VIN numbers, clearly stolen.

But there were also inconsistencies, potential weaknesses in the prosecution's case that a skilled defense team could exploit. Some of the key witnesses had checkered pasts that could be used to discredit their testimony. There were questions about the legality of certain searches that had produced crucial evidence.

Meg leaned back in her chair, her mind racing with possibilities. This case would require every ounce of her legal expertise, every trick she'd learned in her years of practice. It would mean long nights, intense pressure, and scrutiny from every angle. But if they pulled it off...

Her concentration was suddenly broken by a soft knock at her office door. She looked up, startled to see James leaning against the doorframe, a sly smile playing on his lips.

"Hard at work, I see," he said, his eyes roaming over her hunched form. "You've been cooped up in here for hours."

Meg felt her cheeks flush, memories of their last encounter flooding back. She straightened up, smoothing her skirt nervously. "Oh, James. I didn't hear you come in."

He sauntered into her office, his presence filling the small space. "I thought I'd see if you wanted to grab some lunch. You look like you could use a break."

Meg glanced at the stacks of papers on her desk, then back at James. His crisp suit accentuated his broad shoulders, and she couldn't help but remember how his hands had felt on her body. She swallowed hard, trying to focus.

"I... I'm actually in the middle of something important," she stammered.

James raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh? Do tell."

Meg hesitated for a moment, then decided to share. Maybe talking it through would help clarify her thoughts. "It's the Delgado case," she explained. "You know, the **** trafficking and auto theft ring?"

James whistled low. "That's a big one. High stakes, lots of media attention."

Meg nodded, warming to the topic. "Exactly. If we can get him off, or even reduce the charges significantly, it could be huge for the firm. The payout alone is staggering."

She walked him through the details of the case, pointing out the key pieces of evidence and potential weaknesses in the prosecution's arguments. As she spoke, her initial nervousness faded, replaced by the thrill of legal strategy.

James listened intently, his eyes gleaming with interest. When she finished, he let out a low whistle. "Impressive, Meg. You've really done your homework on this one."

He moved closer, leaning against her desk. "You know, I think you're onto something here. It's a low-risk, high-reward situation. Even if we don't get a full acquittal, any reduction in charges would be seen as a win. And if we pull it off..." He trailed off, letting the implications hang in the air.

Meg felt a surge of excitement, both from the case and from James' proximity. "You really think so?"

James nodded, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Absolutely. This could be your big break, Meg. The case that puts you on the map."

James' eyes glinted with excitement as he leaned in closer. "But that's not the only opportunity on the horizon, Meg. I've got something else that could really boost your career."

Meg felt her pulse quicken, both from his proximity and the promise in his words. "Oh? What do you mean?"

"There's a big conference coming up in Las Vegas next month," James explained, his voice low and enticing. "All the major players in corporate law will be there. I'm talking CEOs, general counsels, partners from top firms across the country."

Meg's eyes widened. "That sounds incredible."

James nodded, a sly smile playing on his lips. "It is. And I want you to come with me."

Meg felt her breath catch in her throat. "Me? But... why?"

"Because you're talented, Meg. You've got potential, and I think it's time we started showcasing that to the right people." His hand brushed against hers on the desk, sending a jolt of electricity through her. "This could be your chance to make those crucial connections, to get your name out there."

Meg's mind raced with the possibilities. Networking with top-level executives, rubbing elbows with the elite of the legal world - it was an opportunity she'd only dreamed of.

"We'd be there for a week," James continued. "Days filled with seminars and panel discussions, nights of cocktail parties and private dinners. It's where the real deals are made, where careers are launched."

His eyes locked onto hers, intense and smoldering. "And of course, we'd have plenty of time alone together. To... strategize."

Meg felt a flush creep up her neck. She remembered their last encounter, the way his hands had felt on her body.

"I... I don't know what to say," Meg stammered, her mind whirling.

On one hand, the Delgado case was a massive opportunity. It could cement her reputation as a skilled litigator, bring in a huge payday, and elevate the firm's status. But it would mean long hours, intense pressure, and no guarantees of success.

On the other hand, the conference offered a chance to make invaluable connections, to learn from the best in the business, and potentially open doors she never thought possible.

"I need some time to think about it," she said finally.

James nodded, his hand lingering on hers for a moment longer. "Of course, take your time. But don't take too long," he said, his voice low and smooth. "Opportunities like this don't come around often."

As he spoke, his voice took on a velvety quality that seemed to caress her very soul. There was something hypnotic about the way he emphasized certain words, the cadence of his speech lulling her into a trance-like state. Meg found herself hanging on his every syllable, drinking in the promises of success and opportunity.

"Picture it, Meg," James continued, his eyes gleaming with intensity. "The glittering lights of Las Vegas, the opulent hotel suites, the exclusive parties where deals are made over glasses of champagne that cost more than most people's monthly rent. You'll be rubbing elbows with the elite, making connections that could skyrocket your career to unimaginable heights."

His words painted a vivid picture in Meg's mind. She could almost feel the plush carpet of a high-roller suite beneath her feet, taste the bubbles of expensive champagne on her tongue. The allure of it all was intoxicating.

"And then there's the conference itself," James went on, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Cutting-edge seminars on corporate law, panel discussions with some of the brightest legal minds in the country. You'll have access to insights and strategies that could set you apart from every other young attorney in the field. Imagine walking into that room, Meg—a **** to be reckoned with."

“Are you sure you want me there?” she asked softly, searching for validation.

“Absolutely,” he replied, his voice fervent.

They are interrupted by the sharp click-clack of high heels on the tiled floor. Meg looked up to see a frazzled secretary burst into the room, searching James. As he had left, she was left alone with her thoughts, her mind buzzing with conflicting options. Should she choose the travel, or stay and tackle the challenging work case that lay before her? The decision weighed heavily on her shoulders as she gazed out the paperwork, lost in contemplation.
