Chapter 18
by FlightoftheBeers
How does the first week go?
Surprisingly well?
Jake's room had a few amenities, such as a TV and adjoining bathroom. He mostly kept to himself, mostly coming out to grab dinner and bring it back to his room. It was like having a moody teenager in the house, but it was very easy to forget he was even there. You weren't really sure what he was doing while the two of you were at work, but the house was still in one piece when you came home.
You still weren't sure how or why he'd been placed with you guys. Both you and Aubrey were highly skeptical, but he didn't really even bother interacting with you. It was confusing, to say the least.
The week flew by as the unknowns precariously hung over your heads. You both were waiting for something to happen, but nothing did. You mentioned as much at Officer Jaymes's visit, even going so far as to ask why he'd been placed with you.
"I can't say I know," Officer Jaymes shrugged. "I'm not privy to that information. It is a bit weird, but maybe he just really doesn't have anywhere else to go? You can always ask him."
"Yea... I think I'll pass on that. As weird as it is that he keeps to himself, it's better than him causing trouble. Even if he's just biding his time until he's free again, it could be worse," you replied. The air was awkward as you sat in the living room with her. Aubrey had to stay at work since one of you needed to be there and the other here. You felt like Officer Jaymes was hiding something, but you had no idea what.
"Honestly, I'd rather it that he'd died in jail," she grit her teeth. "He made my life a living hell in high school and now that I'm on the other side, I can't say it doesn't at least feel a little good to be able to lord this power over him."
"Wait, high school? Did we go to school together?" You asked as you mentally ran through a list of your classmates. There had been a lot, so trying to nail down who she was proved difficult.
"I'm sure we did, but I can't say if we ever ran into each other. With a class of like three hundred people, odds are there's a lot of us we never actually met," she gave an indifferent shrug. She was right; your circle had been rather small and even though you knew of some people outside of it, you could hardly remember every single person.
"Well, not to say I'm glad he made others' lives a living hell, but at least I have someone to commiserate with. It did feel good putting him away and, even now, holding power over him like this," you couldn't help but crack a small smile which she returned.
"Hey, I know this is... weird, but would you want to grab coffee sometime? It'd be nice to talk to someone about all of that stuff— someone who went through it. Not like a date or anything, but just to talk." She clarified, though you had no false impressions of what she meant.
"Yea, we could do that for next week's meeting," you smiled and stood up before seeing her out. As you closed the door and turned around, you saw Jake peering from behind the corner. You almost jumped!
"Be careful with her. She's psycho," he muttered.
"Yea, well we all are after how you treated us in high school," you shot back. Of course he'd call her crazy; he did that to any girl who wouldn't sleep with him.
"Whatever," he huffed off, returning to his room.
