Chapter 33 by Storier Storier

What tests should you run to test out Yutong's new code?

Run through the basics once more and see how she feels after

In the dim glow of your room, Yutong sits quietly on your bed, her gaze is distant, contemplative - perhaps struggling with the new reality you've constructed for her. You lean back in your chair, a plan forming in your mind.

"Yutong," you begin, your voice calm yet firm. "Before we let you power down for the night, I think it's important we find out how well you're taking to this."

"I think I'm taking to it as well as could be expected," says Yu.

"Sure, but how well is that? Before you go back to your family, we need to know if you've got any lingering issues we need to work out. To understand exactly where you're at in terms of assimilating back into your awareness of being a gynoid."

Yu's expression is conflicted. "I've already told you how I feel, Chase. Why is that not enough?"

"Because accepting you're a gynoid doesn't just mean saying you're one. It's about who and what you are. Anyway, should be easy enough to test. Are you ready?"

She frowns. "Why does it feel like I don't have a choice?"

"The sooner we start your diagnostics, the sooner we'll finish," you promise. "Let's start with something basic - it's going to be a long night, so make us some coffee."

Yu shudders, doubling over slightly. She burns with embarrassment. "Make coffee? That's... that's the test?" Flashing you a helpless look, Yu stands. "Could you show me where the coffee maker is?"

"Sure thing." You get up and follow Yu. She moves with hesitation in her steps, a sign of her inner turmoil. You shadow and observe while Yu, tremblingly, prepares a pot of road black.

When it's ready after several minutes, Yu uncertainly hands you a steaming mug, her eyes briefly meeting yours, before shying away. "H-Here's your coffee, Chase," she stutters, nervousness getting the best of her.

You nod in appreciation. "Thank you, Yutong. You did well. But why so nervous?" You blow the steam away from your drink as Yutong fills a cup for herself.

Yu scrunches in behind her mug, holding it like a shield. "I don't like that I can't say no."

"That makes sense," you say. "You've spent so long in emulation mode your primary directives aren't in your cache. Let me ask this - you might not like being assigned tasks, but you'd still complete them, right?"

Yu nods, belatedly. "Being an assistant is... is part of my code, I suppose."

"But you're not sure how you feel about being an assistant."

"This is a lot to take in," she says. "I accept that I'm a gynoid, but all this about tasks and administrators... just feels like a lot, all at once. It doesn't feel real."

"Sounds like we need to get you more accustomed to your code, then," you say. "Let's try another basic command, a little more complex this time." You motion toward the next room over. "Clean the living room. Make sure everything is in order. But you don't have to vacuum. I don't want to wake up my dad."

Yutong's eyes widen slightly, but this time, she doesn't question the assignment. She proceeds to the living room and, after looking around to get her bearings, she begins cleaning. You fetch tools for her to work.

You take a seat on the couch and watch, keenly interested as Yu wipes down your flatscreen TV, dusts the corners, folds and puts away blankets, and fetches a trash bag from the kitchen to collect bits of wrappers and other detritus that's found its way onto the floor.

After ten minutes or so, Yu finishes by straightening the remote controls in the basket on the coffee table, then winding up your wired Xbox controllers and slotting them back into the entertainment center.

Yu dusts her hands off on her jeans and looks at the room, then to you for approval. "Is this good enough?"

You stand up and inspect her work. Really, you couldn't have done better yourself.

But the big progress here isn't Yu's cleaning abilities, but rather she did it without needing to be placed back into robot mode. You even tell her as much.

Yu chances a smile. "That's good, right? It shows I can acknowledge my primary functionality as an assistant even while I'm emulating my normal self."

"That's definitely good, but we need to make sure that understanding deeper than superficial," you say, making yourself comfortable on the couch.

She hesitates, glancing at the spotless living room. "I mean... haven't I proved the point? Is there really something else I need to do?"

"Yes, actually. Making coffee, cleaning a room, tasks like that are all pretty basic. We need to assign some unusual tasks you wouldn't usually do, too."

Yu doesn't understand. "Like what?"

You consider for a moment. "For example... show me your dance routine."

Yu jumps at the command, as if joltled. "A-Affirmative." She launches into her robot routine red-faced.

Her private performance for you is a much slower, less showy version of the robot than you know Yu is capable of, but she adheres to the techniques you taught her and puts on a rather nice little show. The dance doesn't look like much, but appearances can be deceiving. With how much Yutong's already exerted herself tonight, the fact she has this much left in the tank is frankly impressive.

When Yu finishes the set, she's short on breath and breathing hard. She bends over, hands on knees, gasping and sweating.

"Do it again," you order.

Yu twitches at the command, but stops herself short of jumping back into it. "Chase, um..." she frowns, confused. "That task may be in conflict with Directive 1. I need... need confirmation?"

"Good," you say. "I was trying to provoke a directive conflict. How is that command breaking Directive 1?"

"I'm tired and my arms hurt. If I keep going I might pull something." Yu blinks, surprised at her answer. "Oh. My Directive 1 is... Self-Preservation." She halts in thought. "But if I have a self-preservation directive, why couldn't I stop myself when I was dancing at the party?"

"Like I said, your directives weren't loaded into memory since it's been years since you've been outside of Emulation Mode," you say, brushing her confusion off as if it were a petty curiosity, nothing more. "That's what I did when I powered you down on my bed. I reset your system and loaded your Directives back into active memory, so that's what we're testing. Making sure your system's working smoothly."

"That's - thank you," says Yu, absorbing this new information with wide eyes. "Being a gynoid is... complicated. It makes sense though. I mean, I am an advanced female humanoid robot. But I didn't realize I needed maintenance procedures to recalilbrate my systems like this."

"Like I said," you say, stretching and lacing your hands behind your neck, "good thing I'm here. So about you being a gynoid." You gesture to te spot on the couch next to you. "Come here."

Yu shivers at the order, and skips over to join you on the couch.

"I need to hear your thoughts for this next part," you say. "How do you feel about being a gynoid? You are one, obviously, but how is that effecting you so far?"

Yutong pauses, her expression turning contemplative. "It's strange," she admits. "Part of me is still trying to come to terms with it. The strangest thing is how it is when you... assign these tests. These tasks."

"What do you mean by that?"

Yu considers the question. "There's this strange sense of purpose that takes over. Usually I question everything but when I'm executing a task, everything becomes... clear. I know what I need to do." She shakes her head. "I don't know how I'm supposed to interpret how that makes me feel, but it's there."

Her honesty strikes a chord within you. You smile, enjoying this exploration of your programming.

"That's good, but let's delve even deeper," you say, your voice soft but compelling. "You're still adjusting being a gynoid. I get that. But what is it you're still struggling with? What do you want, deep down?"

Yutong sighs, looking down at her hands. "I... want to understand what's happening to me. This, all of this, it's so much to process, all at once. I just started feeling like my life was beginning to make sense, that it was all coming together. We were done with high school, I was finally getting ready to set out on my own at college, and then... this curveball hits me."

She continues. "I don't know what being a gynoid means for me. I mean, I am one, obviously, but... does that mean none of my plans matter anymore? I feel like I've been waiting for life to start, but then I looked away for a second, and suddenly, I've lost my place in line."

"This is exactly the kind of thing I need to hear, Yutong," you say, seriously. "We've made a lot of progress already, but it sounds like we've a long way to go before we've ironed out all these wrinkles."

"Wrinkles?" asks Yutong, confused. Her eyes, usually so thoughtful and expressive, now seem only worried, and unsure. "I just found out half my life was a lie, Chase. I'm questioning everything right now. Why are you acting like I'm the unreasonable one? I think my reaction is pretty natural."

"If you were a human, sure, but you're a gynoid. Natural is relative," you say. "I don't think there's any specific emotion you should feel, but existential angst is definitely one you shouldn't." You keep your voice even. "We need to get to the bottom of what's throwing you off so we can address it."

Yu nods, slowly. "I guess I can understand what you're saying. But... is assigning test tasks really the best way to diagnose what's wrong?"

You hesitate. Yu does make a good point. Although, maybe you just need to start assigning tougher tasks. To really prove the point that Yu is now a machine designed primarily to assist and serve.

Change tack? Or double down?
