Chapter 20 by takacube
Does the coin work as planned?
No, but it gives Tom another idea
Tom took the coin and looked at Sarah, who was looking at him equally intrigued by what he was trying to do and a bit confused at the suddenness of the request. "Any ideas on what you'd like to test out?" she asked and, for a moment, Tom paused as he hadn't gotten that far.
"What do you think I should try?"
She shrugged and then patted his hand. "Why not go for something simple yet easy enough for you to recognize? You should be able to tell."
Tom nodded and with that, slipped off the bed and stood in the center of the doorway. "Sarah, good night." He watched the girl blink once and his daughter shuffled nervously in bed as he held the coin tightly in his hand, blushing at the sight of her father standing in her bedroom late at night. "Hey, sorry, didn't mean to surprise you like this."
"That's okay, daddy...I'm sure it'll be fine tomorrow." She paused for a moment and then looked at him. "Did you think of what you wanted to ask of mom?"
Tom paused for a moment, wondering where that line of thought came from and, from the look on her face, he could tell that she too was a bit confused at what she was saying. He chalked that up for something later to discuss before he shook his head clear. "I wish Miranda would find it easier to talk to me about her issues with her sister." The coin, stayed as cold as it was before he walked in. A few more seconds of waiting told him pretty much his suspicions from earlier were true: the coin wouldn't work on another person like how it still impacted Sarah (but not Amorina, which was odd considering they were essentially one and the same.)
"Mom will come around." Amorina reassured her father, not knowing about the wish and the coin in his hand. He just smiled at his daughter before he decided to test out his thought and focused instead on his daughter.
"I wish you'd like to be held by me just like before..."
She blushed and playfully brought the blanket up to her face. "Dad, I'm 18...I'm not a baby..."
He laughed a bit and nodded, leaning over and giving her a kiss on the forehead, pretending not to notice her blushing became even darker. "Yes, I keep forgetting. Good night."
Tom slipped out of the room and headed down the stairs, pausing at the foot to notice that the coin had stayed cold in his hand. If the man had been vague in the beginning, he knew better now. "Only impacts the woman I love truly..." he muttered with a small smile and after that, returned to his office and placed the coin back in its spot. With a sigh, he picked up the phone and looked through the numbers before he found one and pressed it.
"Oh, good evening, Ms. Norman? I'm sorry for calling you so late but I wanted to ask if you were available tomorrow morning for coffee? I wanted to talk with you about the team..."
