Chapter 31

Where's a guy like you to get a computer for a girl like Jane?
No need to reinvent the wheel. Go to Best Buy
After finishing your food, you hop into Jane's new jeep (it smells of pine thanks to the previous owner's taste in air freshener) and head to the local Best Buy.
While better computers and better deals exist online, you’d rather do this with a physical object you can see in person and walk out with. Claiming things through the internet feels like it'd be a hassle - claim one computer from a warehouse located someplace in southern China and try to get it shipped to you through non-standard channels? No thanks.
At the local Best Buy, Jane remains weirdly, staunchly conservative about which laptop she’d like you to claim for her. Only repeated insistence that she stop looking at price tags and start looking at functionalities gets her to move on to the fancier machines.
You’re browsing the movie section when Jane sneaks up behind you and grabs your wrist. Without words, she leads you to one of the main system end aisle displays.
Halting in front of a stylish blue and silver gaming laptop - the Quicksilver, says the display case - Jane points, casting a furtive look over her shoulder to ensure none of the sales reps are looking your way. "I always sort of wished I could have one of these…” she says, only half able to meet your eyes.
Jane’s not shy. She’s not demure. She’s confident and self-assured. Today, though, she’s been acting totally out of character, and it feels like the more you use your powers, the worse it gets.
Her behavior must be related to how she perceives your powers. Sully plays your powers off as a joke, Pearl’s annoyed by them, Yu reacts with curiosity - so what is Jane’s reaction?
She acts blase when you discuss the possibilities your powers afford you. You wrote her reaction off as a type of total comprehension, but maybe that's not quite what's going on?
Jane's red as a beet when you show the cashier the claimed Quiksilver laptop case.
"For inventory purposes," you explain, motioning the box toward the cashier. “We could just walk out with this thing, but I’d hate to be the guy who has to explain why one of these babies went missing.”
Jane hides her face in her hands.
There. What is that reaction? Insecurity? Embarrassment? It doesn’t make sense.
The cashier, meanwhile, is apologetic that you found your laptop for sale amongst store stock. "Let me get the skew real quick," she says, scanning the machine and taking down the number. "I'm so glad you were able to find this, sir. I have no idea why your laptop was on our shelves, next time we're stocking we'll double check for other lost customer items mixed in with the merchandise."
You doubt they’ll find anything else in the store, but you appreciate the sentiment.
So yeah. The cashier’s reaction reconfirms it. Everybody seems to have a different idea of what exactly is going on when you claim something. Jane’s take has to be something that makes sense.
Jane's awkward all the way back to the jeep, where you hand her the brand new Quicksilver gaming rig.
"All yours chief," you say.
Jane hugs the box to her body and, swallowing, forces herself to meet your eyes. "Chase?"
"What's up?"
What does Jane want to tell you?
Powers & Consequences
It's not the power, but how it's used. For better or worse, one thing's sure: nothing will ever be the same.
Stories of those who acquire power over others, or themselves, and the unique opportunities such power affords. The temptations power incurs, and the consequences that result.
