Prologue:
My name is Oaks.
Until recently I lived in a big city with my parents and older sister until I got into some trouble at school (not actually my fault, but, as they say, I was guilty by association), and got expelled.
My parents always thought I was a bad egg anyways, always giving me shit for stuff I didn't even do (not that I didn't do some of the stuff), and I truly believe that they were looking for an excuse to get rid of me for a long time now.
So, after "the incident", my parents were more than happy to send me away to live with my Uncle Ryder (my mom's stepbrother, who she probably hated even more than me) and his family.
That's why I'm currently sitting in the back of a luxurious black SUV headed toward a gated community located smack dab in the middle of nowhere over halfway across the country from where I spent the current majority of my life growing up.
Like seriously, where the fuck am I? We've been travelling through a forested area for over an hour now. I'm beginning my think I'm being taken deep into the woods to be murdered.
I think about asking the driver if he's gotten us lost or something, but just before I do we reach a very tall steel gate that's connected to a very tall cement wall covered in vines that branches off from the gate in both directions deep into the forest.
The guard that's standing by the gate approaches the SUV and my temporary chauffeur rolls down his window.
"Good afternoon, Mike," the guard says. "Did you have a good trip?"
"Luckily it wasn't very eventful," says my chauffeur, whose name is apparently Mike.
The guard looks back through the window towards me. "I see you've brought us a new resident?" He says, giving me a creepy smile. "Ryder's nephew, if I'm not mistaken."
"Step-nephew," I grumble.
"Oh, right," says the guard.
I throw on my headphones as the guard and Mike finish their casual conversation. Just before the guard turns to open the gate up for us, the guard gives me one last, creepy look and I'm pretty sure he licked his lips while doing so.
The big gate opens up and we enter into a wide valley. From the top of the hill where we are currently positioned I can make out a shimmering lake surrounded by a wide variety of buildings. We make our way down the hill and through a quaint town that seems to be filled with a whole bunch of happy people.
No, seriously, everyone that I've seen so far has had a big smile attached to their face. And it seems that when they pass each other they smile even bigger and give each other small waves and say hi to each other and stop and talk to each other. Back in my old city you'd likely get punched or even shot if you tried to be friendly with your fellow man. All we did is rush down the street looking at our feet and pretended nobody else was around.
Finally, after making our way by numerous small shops, restaurants, businesses, and residential buildings we finally pull up to a fair sized white house with a picket fence and freshly mowed lawn. Mike got out and opened my door before grabbing my luggage from the trunk. He leads me up a cobblestone walkway and sets my luggage down in front of the stairs of the house's porch before heading back to his SUV and driving off, leaving me alone.
