Making dinner

Chapter 9 by smlfox

John comes down the stairs and meets Doe in the kitchen.

Leaning against the counter, John asks "how was your orientation?"

She empties the grocery bags and responds "it was good. I spent the morning filling out paper work and that good stuff, then the afternoon was more of an introduction/tour type of thing. I'm starving, though."

"I was wondering why they would do an orientation on the weekend" John said, sounding confused.

Without looking up, she explains "well, it's easier to show people around and introduce them to various equipment and stuff on the weekend. The pediatric unit tends to be a bit quieter on weekends as opposed to places like the ER and ICU."

Confused, he said questioningly "you never said you were doing pediatrics." In the same breath he added: "and is there anything I can do to help you make dinner?"

Looking up and turning to face John, Doe says "no, I'm doing dinner tonight. Once I get the sauce made, I'm going to change clothes. How was your day?"

John tells her about cleaning the house and doing laundry. He adds that he got her tire fixed, and then just ran a few errands before going for a bike ride.

By the time he finishes, the sauce is cooking and the water is boiling for the noodles. She drops the noodles in and then heads upstairs to change. She returns a few minutes later in the pair of jeans he had washed earlier, a form fitting t-shirt, and her hair up in a pony tail.

John set the table while she was changing, so when she returned they could eat dinner.
