Chapter 4

Time to gather firewood.
Firewood gathering time!
It was nearly dawn by the time he had gathered the wood for a small fire and enough to barely make a small triangular shelter, that utterly failed and simply became more firewood for the fire that was now just outside the tree, thankfully still providing a small amount of heat to the now cramped occupants. He wasn't going to think about complaining though, not while he was actually planning on how to get food. He was originally going to set some dead-fall traps, but had no bait so he figured it wouldn't work, not to mention he didn't know what he was doing.
He sighed, partially in defeat and partially in frustration. He wasn't ready to just give up this time, and he wondered why. His sullen face then looked out the burrow's hole to see the snow and the rising sun light up the area. He marveled as the natural light seemed to bring the frightening dark woods come to life with a brilliant shine and glow. A small yawn from the girl brought him back from his marveling though, and he found himself ever so slightly more determined to survive.
He went to leave and grabbed a large branch that he could use as a club. Then he realized the girl would likely be colder without him cramped in there. He slipped off his coat and shivered slightly, it was even colder than his world and he strangely welcomed it as he crouched into the burrow and covered as much of her as he could with the coat. He then saw the back of it was also shredded, likely from his fall, but it still unnerved him.
He finally left with a nervous glance to the large tree and found himself trying to move silently through the crunching snow. Soon however, he found a fair sized deer of some sort and tried to sneak up on it, but the snow would give him away at every moment and the deer like creature simply kept a few pace in front of him.
"Great now the animals mock me..." He grumbled towards the creature. "Stand still so I can eat you please."
The creature's head snapped as a thunderous roar exploded from further off. The sound of metal against metal range familiar to him as did breaking wood. The creature glanced nervously to the area then to him and dashed off at it's highest speed.
"Oh man, now I need to run to catch it." He groaned, the shriek of a woman pulled his attention back to the sounds of battle though. He looked anxiously between the sounds and the creature and found himself torn.
Check out the sounds or chase the deer?
