Chapter 10

Do you sign it? Bury Sam forever?

Yes.

You take a breath, thinking about the life that was yours as Sam Smith. Workaholic, failed marriage. And for what? You don't even get to keep the job, the house, the investments. Was it all a waste? No, it wasn't. You decide. It led you here, and you learned a lot from it. If this is what it takes to start over, so be it. Goodbye, Sam. Rest in peace.

You sign the name Katie O'Brien to the NDA and set the pen down on the table. It's done.

The woman sniffs and reclaims the document, adding it to her folder. "You know, if you hadn't signed it, you'd have forfeited the bank account they promised." To your surprised look, she adds, "Oh you didn't see that? Hmm. Well I was actually hoping you wouldn't sign it." Her expression was neutral, but had a hard edge to it.

She presented a folder like one would receive upon opening a new bank account. A few checks, a bank card, lots of advertisements for various financial products, and other information about the account.

"That's all. You're all set, Miss O'Brien. Enjoy your life."

To your ears, she might as well have told you to get lost. But you choose to be the bigger woman and smile, "Thank you."

You push away from the desk and stand but as you turn to leave you stumble a bit in your heels and the woman laughs. You walk a little more carefully as you find your way out of the hospital and out onto the street.

There's a chill in the air and you suddenly wish you had some kind of coat. Or pants. The slight breeze cuts right through your tights, and you are very aware of the empty space between your thighs as the air brushes against you. You bring your legs a little closer together for comfort and look around.

"Well, now what?" You have no house, job, family, friends... no nothing. You, Katie O'Brien, are nobody.

So what are you going to do? You've always been a hard-worker, and you like to stop and reason things out when you find yourself in a crossroads. So you take stock of your situation.

You need a place to live, which can be expensive, especially if you want to live alone, as you've done for years.
You need to get a job, although you jokingly think that you could just find a sugar daddy or something and you'd be set. The thought shocks you for a moment. Nah, that's a joke, right? Yes, definitely. You're not interested in men, after all.
You're wearing the only change of clothes you own, which is fine for the time being, but could be a problem tomorrow.

These are the most pressing things you have to deal with. Your stomach grumbles to remind you that you're also very hungry.

What's first on the list?
