Not smiling, Looking horrified!

As she is talking, and tells me that I am the only male, I suddenly think of my family. My Parents! My Sibling!

I had one Sister, still 18, that had been living in an apartment down the street from me, what the heck had happened to her!? Surely she had also gotten a letter!

The overseer turns around and sees my face. I must have looked horrified, because she stared for a moment before stepping around the desk and crouching in front of me, "Are you alright? John, Answer Me!" She snapped her fingers in front of my face, and then stood as if to call someone.

I jerked out of my frozen state, and grabbed her wrist, "My family! In the rush I don't know what happened! I must find out if they made it! Can you help me!?"

She jerked away at first, when i grabbed her hand, but stepped forward again when I spoke. Gosh she must think i'm nutty! I thought.

"I'm sorry..." I said, "It's just that I suddenly remembered"

She nodded, "Alright... yes, let's go talk to my sectetary, she has the records..." She led me away from the chair, still holding the hand that I had grabbed her with. That felt a bit uncomfortable, like i was being led on by a parent...

We exited the office and stepped to the desk of the secretary, a pretty young lady with her hair in a bun. She looked up at the overseer, "Yes ma'am?"

"Shaina, I need you to look up some residents for me... from the whole vault network... the last name of, Doe"

"Yes Ma'am" and she turned away, typing on her computer terminal.
