Evolved

You are sitting in a college class; everyone goes to some form of university once they become 23. The class you are sitting in on is ancient civilizations. Specifically, the 21st century. You watch the holographic board as a pre-recorded lesson explains how humans have evolved to what they are today. In the early 21st century humans were on the precipice of destroying their world. Plastics covered everything and were in everyone. Every day was a natural disaster of some sort and the animals were quickly becoming extinct due to the apathy of the time. The scientists back then warned that they were on the verge of a great extinction and weren’t sure if humans would survive it or not. Still, the civilizations and governments only cared about greed and only a few short hundred years later just such an event happened. There was a deadly disease that wiped out nearly half of the planet. No one could escape it. Those who succumbed died dreadfully buy those who survived the disease found themselves changed.

Now roughly 1 million years later you had to sit and take notes about something you were intimately aware of. The change was felt amongst all of you sitting in that class. Ancient humans who survived the disease became entwined physically and mentally with their own planet. Humans could now feel the earth’s magnetic field. There are different levels of intimacy with the earth, some can even manipulate the fields around them to make weapons or heal others. It is nothing new to you and while how it happened is somewhat interesting you can’t help but take a deep sigh and look at the time every few minutes or so. It's almost time for a break period and today you plan on heading to the general area on this learning space colony to meet some new people. You are hoping to see if some of your old friends back home are in the same section as you.
