Potty break

You decide you really need to take care of business before you meet Mrs. Lutz, so just as you clear Customs, you duck into the nearest ladies’ room.

You were raised to be rather modest about most things, and you are relieved that the bathroom is not overly crowded. You choose a stall, close the door and sit down.

Moments later, you hear someone else walk in, talking on her phone. You don’t try to listen in, but it isn’t like you have a lot of options. The person speaking sounds like a girl about your age, and you can only guess about the person on the other end of the phone.

“No, I told you I won’t be home until later,” you hear the girl say. “Right... and I told you Mom wants me to stay home tonight because our new houseguest from Japan is arriving. In fact, we’re here at the airport now to get her....”

Your ears perk up. Surely she can’t be talking about you, can she?

“I haven’t met her yet, and I’m not going to ask her if she is into threesomes in our first conversation! .... I know, but Donna was different — we were at a swinger party, after all....”

You shake your head, trying to make sense of what you are hearing. There are some phrases they just didn’t cover in your English class.

“I know you are.... So am I.... I’ve been thinking about it all day.... Are you sure your mom isn’t pissed about the table? The legs don’t usually break like that, but you were relentless!”

“I might be able to sneak out after everyone is in bed .... I’ll give you a call and let you know. ... and if the subject comes up, I’ll ask Tomika if she is into threesomes...”

So she IS talking about you! This must be Candy, the Lutz daughter you will be rooming with! What a coincidence!

You would like to introduce yourself, but doing so in the bathroom seems rather odd. Besides, it might make her uncomfortable to know you overheard her talking about you — even though you didn’t understand half of what she was saying.
