You stammer something about not expecting anything from them.

Sara smiles. “Of course you expect nothing. That’s what makes us want to repay you. You’ve been so selfless. I’m only sorry we didn’t do this sooner.”

You find your voice again. “We?”

Sara is indignant, her auburn hair flying. “Well, of course I’ll be joining!”

Your voice is tiny. “Oh.” This is not really where you figured this conversation would be going.

Izzi is on point, acting as family matron again. “Do you need some time alone with John? Or do you want to jump right in with Mindy and me?”
