“Diglett, go!” You throw the pokeball onto the ground in front of you, figuring that the floating islands in the pool wouldn’t be a good choice. Misty, on the other hand, throws her pokeball directly onto one of the floating islands. “Staryu, I choose you!”

You make the first move. “Diglett, use Sand Attack!” A cloud of sand drifts over the water, but Staryu jumps into the air and avoids it. “Good job Staryu! Now, use Rapid Spin!”

Staryu swoops in from above, managing to land a glancing blow against Diglett. It’s not a good start, but her pokemon is up close now, and that’s exactly what you wanted. “Diglett, use Scratch!” The attack lands and Staryu recoils, but it’s still able to fight.

Misty follows up right away. “Use Water Gun!” You order Diglett to burrow underground to dodge it, but the blast of water makes it into the hole in the ground before Diglett can relocate. A few seconds later, Diglett emerges from its hole and slumps over, unable to continue fighting.

You recall Diglett back to its pokeball, hanging your head in shame as your first gym battle ends in total defeat.

“Uh… you gonna send out your next pokemon?” Misty asks. You can barely project your voice as you reply, “I… I don’t have another pokemon.”

She stares at you dumbfounded. “You actually came in here with a single Ground-type pokemon and thought you could win!?”
