Deserters (part 2)
Planning and preparations.
As far as I could see the road and railroad between Freudenstadt and Baiersbronn was the most vital entry point to our region. From Baiersbronn the road split into multiple entry points of which most of them eventually lead back to our area. So we had to stop them there, or better even before that point. We couldn’t sit in the villages, but the road was in between two forested hillsides. To prevent being outflanked we needed a few... Aheum, volunteers to guard our backs and at the southern entry of the road. The hill west of the city was a good vantage point to attack the IFV’s in the city center, the hill north of the city would either be covered by a sniper or anti-flank measures, the hill northeast was the attack position for the IFV’s at the city stadium.
But since I wanted at least two IFV’s at the same time, we would attack the first IFV entering the road, while at the same time attack the IFV’s in the city. Perhaps, if we’re lucky we can destroy them all, if we’re a bit less lucky, we can get at least three of them. With bad luck, just one, with no luck at all... we’re fucked.
The reaction of the Russians would make the difference in the next scenario’s. Would they avoid using the IFV’s or continue to use them. It would be stupid if they did, since by then they will be aware we can blow them up at range. They would go on foot, or race in cars, out of which they will have to step out eventually. Certainly if their tires are destroyed. If they start to go on foot, they will avoid the area of their unfortunate IFV - demises, and probably start to get around to find us. The snipers will have the biggest task here. Either to let them through, direct fire by the rest of the section, or to shoot one or two at random at different times and locations.
The problem was that ironically the Russians were most **** when they were using the IFV’s as troop transports. So we needed them to only venture out in those, before we could spring the trap. They needed a good reason to do so, especially with the gasoline station in flames.
No way I would sacrifice one of us, to shoot at them into the city from the west to draw them in. There was however a different solution. Mines, AID’s, explosives,... You know, the nasty stuff used by the Afghans against the US-troops... Perhaps they would still think there is some resistance after all. And not think of a trained section with enough weaponry for a small army.
Another problem is that despite being doubled in size adopting the orphans, we still didn’t have enough wo-manpower. So I opted for the AT-crews to sized just one, with multiple preloaded AT-launchers. It would be quite the bulk to carry them, but we had enough of those.
With Didier and Tom watching the city, alerting us if any soldiers decided to take a stroll, we started setting up prefixed fully cloaked fire positions as we had done in our first battle at the Regen. Lina was fine after her morning sickness and becoming quite fierce in joining the operation. I looked at Didier and he just shrugged his shoulders, as if he told me he had tried to convince her otherwise, but lost too. Like I had any choice in that matter.
I instructed Mina to give lessons to a few volunteer female villagers in shooting , setting up prefixed fire positions etcetera. If we survived the operation, we would expand the lessons to anyone capable and of sound mind of holding a gun.
“I suppose I am the medic again? To be put behind the frontlines? Protected at all costs?” Kate started complaining before I gave everyone their positions.
“Yes and no, Kate. I’ll set you up at the north end of the road, where you fill fire AT’s as well. You will be the linchpin of springing the trap. Once that is done, you will run and ride on a bicycle to another spot to be our eyes north of Baiersbronn where you will be able to see almost the entire road up to the turn to the east to Christophstal leading to Freudenstadt. You will probably have to climb in a tree, so make sure you can rappel your way down fast.”
“That same turn the roads make to Christophstal to Freudenstadt... let’s name that section CF... is where we need to draw in the IFV’s, so CF is where we need to draw in the foot soldiers, and for them to flee back to Freudenstadt, the F-city. Since no one is that stupid to lure them in, we’ll need to mine the shit out of it, and possibly lure some in with some AK-gunfire. They will see the AID’s we want them to see, and don’t see the rest of it, if they for some reason opt for a slow IFV covering foot soldiers.”
“From there they will hopefully opt to enter the road between Baiersbronn... fuck it, let’s name this section BCF. We’ll leave them alone until they reach this hill with the ski lift and the hill before this suburb of Baiersbronn. Bloody Germans, they just build everywhere they can...”
“From there, Kate, Tom and Didier fire the AT-launchers at the three different locations, if there are IFV’s left in the city. If there are not, Tom and Didier keep silent, while the rest of us shoot the AT-launchers in BCF. They will keep silent if some men escape from the carnage, don’t know how, but it’s possible, and move to the various sniper locations west and north of F-city. After we hopefully destroyed all their IFV’s we’ll move in the same locations around and pin them in the F-city west, north and south. Then it is coordinating fire, see and shoot. Keep enough time intervals to keep them guessing at our numbers and locations. Shoot, move and hide.”
“Eventually we will need to enter the city though, but only after we destroyed the IFV’s with enough men in them to have made a serious dent in their numbers. The snipers keep overwatch while the rest of us descend from the hills after some time. This last phase could take days. If we’re not sure, we’ll sit tight, we only move when we are safe. If they are fortifying and keep looking into three directions we’ll strike from the east.”
