What do you do?
Peek through the door jam
A new house. There was no telling what might be waiting for you. It had lain vacant and largely derelict for some time. What if there were squatters? Or perhaps it was a left-behind removal guy.
You move, cautiously, towards the door jam and peek through.
Boxes covered the floor of the room beyond, and were even strewn in a state of mid-emptying on the large, ornate master bed. The curtains were thrown back, revealing a morass of greenery from the trees beyond, silhuetted in the midday sunlight.
The light filtering through the trees dappled the floor of the bedroom, and spotlighted a figure on the chaise that sat just in front of the windows beside the vanity.
It took a few seconds to register, but it was Violet, laid across the chair with one leg draped across the arm, and the other foot on the floor. Her feet were bare, but the rest of her remained largely in shadow, due to the light falling through the window. She seemed to be fidgeting somewhat.
