“What do you mean?”

“My familiar. It’s sort of like a magical pet.”

“Mom and dad gave me to you as a pet?”

Part of him wanted to laugh, but the other part was becoming increasingly concerned. He had just seen her work what looked like real magic a moment ago, but he wasn’t full convinced that his sister wasn’t simply going crazy.

“Transforming her familiar is one of the easiest and earliest spells a budding witch learns only because she has a special connection with her familiar. That’s why it had to be you, my brother.”

“So you’re going to turn me into a raven or something?”

“That might be useful if we were living in a house made of candy in the middle of the woods, but this isn’t the medieval era and witches prefer to keep a much lower profile.”

From the look Dan gave her she knew that he was about ready to stick her in a padded cell. That was okay. He would believe her soon enough.
