Owls on the Eclipse Route

Chapter 42 by Perversidade3

Michael entered his office, where Talia sat with serene composure. The air in the room held the scent of expensive incense mingling with Talia al Ghul’s dangerous, floral perfume.

Bari was finishing pouring the tea. Her movements were so swift she seemed to be in several places at once, creating a crimson blur around the furniture. Yet, upon noticing Michael’s presence, she stopped abruptly. Her eyes shone with an almost feverish devotion, her breath coming in short gasps, her maid’s uniform slightly disheveled from the urgency of her movements.

"Master..." Bari began, her voice vibrating at a high pitch.

Michael didn't even look at her for more than a second. He merely raised his hand—a simple gesture that made her freeze in place.

"Leave, Bari. Now." He offered a half-smile, a glint of promise in his eyes. "But don't worry. When I’m finished here, I’ll give you the attention you crave so much. Every single second of it."

Bari let out an audible sigh—a sound of pure anticipation—and vanished in a flash of yellow electricity, leaving only a warm breeze in her wake.

Talia, seated in her leather armchair, watched the scene with an enigmatic smile. She crossed her legs—the slit in her dress revealing the curve of her thigh—and gestured to the chair opposite her.

"You’ve become a collector of beauties, Michael. I see the house’s 'speed' now caters to your whims." Her voice was like velvet over razor blades. "But I didn't summon you here to discuss your harem. We have a problem of social architecture."

Michael sat down, leaning back with the arrogance of a king.

"The Court of Owls." I imagine they tried to claim territory that, technically, belongs to me now.

— They’re like fungus, Michael. They grow in the dark, in the city’s foundations, believing they’re Gotham’s true owners because they know its secrets. — Talia leaned forward, her expression turning icy. — The League of Shadows has already wiped out the outer cells, but the Court is persistent. They don’t fight with armies; they fight with influence, money, and assassins who feel no pain.

Michael laughed—a dry, amused sound. He thought of the rules he had written. To him, the Court wasn’t a threat, merely a poorly written detail in a script he was now editing.

— They think the shadows are where power hides — Michael remarked, rising and walking toward her. — Their mistake is believing I still play by the rules of men. They want to rule Gotham through fear and secrecy?

He stopped in front of Talia; his presence filled the room, his commanding aura making the air heavy.

— I could erase the existence of every single "owl" with a thought. Or, better yet, rewrite their very nature. Imagine, Talia... an entire court of assassins who, instead of serving some archaic ideal, feel an irresistible, biological need to kneel before me.

Talia looked at him, and for a moment, the Demon’s heir dropped her mask of coldness, revealing genuine admiration and latent desire. She stood up and moved closer, her hand sliding across the chest of Michael’s suit.

— You are a fascinating monster — she whispered. — The League of Shadows is ready to hand over the locations of the Court’s nests. But I wonder... what will be our reward for this service?

Michael pulled her by the waist, pressing her body flush against his. She could feel Talia’s heart racing against her own chest.

"The reward will be my mercy, Talia. And perhaps..." — he slid his hand along the curve of her hip — "...some special attention, now that Bari has left the room."

Talia smiled, surrendering to the magnetism of the man who was not merely a master, but the architect of everything she knew. The fate of Gotham, the Court, and the League now depended solely on Michael’s mood.
