Chapter 8

Which course will you vote for?
Option #3
"We have another option," You speak up, "Well maybe we do. Assuming that everything molecularity that can be found on any planet in the solar system can also be found in the Ort Cloud itself we can synthesize new fuel rods for our power reactor and even build a production module for more Stasis Serum."
"Let me understand this," from the furrow of her brow you couldn't tell if Dr. Giles was disapproving, or simply had the fiercest thoughtful face you'd ever seen on a woman before, "You are suggesting that we stop in the depths of space and spend time trying to refuel rather than attempting to get to a real destination?"
"We have the best technology that Earth had to offer on this ship, more medical labs than anywhere outside of ExoJump 01, a fully fitted fabrication room big enough to build a luxury yacht, a genetic library for every known plant and animal on earth, and a greenhouse where we can grow anything that cannot be categorized mineral. Hypothetically it will take no more than year of delay if we select a few subject experts to wake up for the extra jobs we should be able to make a fully functioning refinery like the Federation originally used for mineral harvesting in the asteroid belt and tether it with us before we leave again. We're already talking about several years on either destination, so why not take a breather and restock if we know that we can."
"Cass," CPT Gray spoke up, "Is Sam's suggestion a valid one?"
"In theory Captain, yes." Cassandra replied, "There are spectrum evidances that all known elements in the Solar system can be found in the Ort Cloud. But it will take a month to slow to a safe speed for any attempt at harvesting resources from outside the ship, and the sensors will need to be specially calibrated for finding the specific minerals that we will need."
You looked pointedly at Lucky, who looked at the monitor arrays in the bridge thoughtfully.
"I can do that, but I'll need a comprehensive list of the minerals that we're going to need to find so I can isolate their readings in the software too."
Captain Beatrice Gray clapped her hands with authority, "Done then, Cass begin the deceleration procedures. Juliet, start going through the logs of crew and colonists with any job relation to restoring our ship to full working order, give me a list of all your most probably scenarios for the operation too. Patrick, work with Juliet for now, find the people who you think will be most useful. I'm going to sit down with the data recordings from our trip so far to see if there's any other useful information that we might have picked up on the Ort Cloud. Sam I'd appreciate your help. And Giles..."
"I'm going to be in the medical labs running tests on the health of our crew members."
"I was going to ask..."
"No Bea, we've all been in a chemical coma for over half a century, we have no idea the long term effects that has on our bodies. Technically we could have all died without any cellular aging. I don't know if we're all sterile now, maybe we have crippling genetic mutations that I'll need to unscramble. Maybe we have new diseases that we've never encountered on earth and if I don't get a serum whipped up on the double we'll all die in a few months."
"All my scans from your time in stasis reported your bodies as clear from contaminants." Cassiopeia interjected, "No new diseases have been detected in any person on this ship."
"I will look at the data soon, but first I want to make new vital records of all awake personal, starting with SGT Jones."
You sighed, "With your leave Captain." She nods, "Ok, lets go get this over with."
After you leave the bridge following Dr Giles she asks, "Do you have an issue with doctors, soldier?"
"Nope," you respond, "I have an issue with being an experiment."
She gazes at you with a look, soft but calculating, "On this ship we are all experiments. You might as well get used to it. We're the first humans to be in this situation. I just want to know if we're going to be the last."
"Fair point," you concede, "Just tell me what you need me to do. You're the doctor, not me."
Where too next?
