Chapter 22 by sexycooldude

"Mia," he managed. His mouth felt dry. "Are you sure?"

She shook her head. "No. But I am never late. And it has been a week."

Alex stood up slow. The empty mac and cheese bowls sat on the table like nothing had changed. Everything had changed. He walked toward her but stopped short. He wanted to hold her. He also wanted to run. His hands stayed at his sides.

"It is probably stress," she said. She did not sound like she believed it.

He rubbed the back of his neck. The words came out before he could catch them. "We should have been more careful. I should have been more careful."

Mia went still. Her eyes flicked up to his face. Something in them shifted. "What does that mean?"

Alex knew he had stepped wrong. But his head kept spinning. "I just mean we are young. And we both have classes. And I do not have extra money lying around. If this is happening then..."

She looked down at the floor. Her shoulders pulled in tight. "You think I planned this?"

"No. That is not what I meant." He took one step closer. Too late. Her eyes were already shining.

"I am scared too," she said. A tear slipped down her cheek. She wiped it with the back of her hand but another one followed. "I thought we were being safe. I thought you wanted this. Us."

"I do want us." His voice came out rough. "I am just... I do not know what to do if this is real. I do not want to mess up your life."

She cried harder then. Not loud. Just quiet and steady. Alex felt like the worst person alive. He reached for her hand. She let him take it. Her fingers felt cold.

"I am sorry," he said. "I am freaking out. I did not mean to make it worse."

Mia nodded but did not meet his eyes. She squeezed his hand once, small and quick. "We need a test. I cannot sit here not knowing."

"Okay," he said. "Yeah. Let us go."

They put on their shoes without talking much. Mia grabbed her keys and a hoodie. Alex drove. The car felt too quiet. Every stoplight dragged. He kept his hands on the wheel and his thoughts on loop. She is going to realize I am not ready for any of this. She is going to decide I am too much trouble. What if she has to drop a class. What if her parents find out. What if this is the thing that ends it before we even had a chance.

At the store they walked straight to the back aisle. Alex grabbed the first box he saw. Mia stayed close, her arm brushing his once when someone passed them. He paid with the cash in his pocket and did not look at the total. The drive back felt longer. The test box sat between them on the seat like it was watching.

Back at her apartment they went straight to the bathroom. Mia read the directions out loud in a low voice. Alex stood in the doorway with his arms crossed tight. She used the test and set it on the sink. The timer on her phone started. Five minutes. It felt endless.

They sat on the couch to wait. Mia pulled her knees up and leaned her head on his shoulder without asking. Alex put his arm around her. He held her tighter than usual. She felt warm and real and scared. He could smell her shampoo. His chest hurt from how much he wanted to fix this for her. His mind would not stop. Even if it is negative this changes things. She will remember I panicked. She will remember I said the wrong thing. What if she is only staying close because she is scared right now.

The timer went off. They both stood up fast. Mia went into the bathroom first. Alex followed right behind. The test lay on the sink. One pink line. Clear. Negative.

Mia made a sound that was half a sob and half a laugh. She turned and wrapped her arms around him hard. Her face pressed into his chest. Alex held her back just as tight. His legs felt shaky. He rested his cheek on the top of her head and closed his eyes. Relief hit him in a wave but it did not clear everything out. She is relieved. Of course she is. But what if this just proves we are not ready. What if she is glad because she does not actually want something serious with me long term. What if this was the close call that makes her think twice.

Mia stayed pressed against him for a long minute. Her shoulders shook a little. Alex rubbed slow circles on her back. When she finally pulled back her eyes were red and wet but she was smiling small and shaky.

"It is okay," she whispered. "It is really okay."

He nodded. His throat felt thick. "Yeah. It is."

They did not go back to the couch right away. They stood in the bathroom holding each other. Mia kept one hand on his chest like she needed to feel him breathing. Alex kept both arms around her waist. The scare made everything feel bigger and more fragile at the same time. Her hand on him. The way she leaned her weight into him. The quiet in the apartment. All of it felt heavier now.

Later they moved to the couch anyway. Mia curled against his side and traced little lines on the back of his hand with her fingertip. Alex watched her do it. He did not want to let go. She felt like the only solid thing in the room. He still carried the doubt in the back of his head. Quiet. Persistent. What if this was too close. What if one day she decides the risk is not worth it. What if I am not enough to make her stay when things get hard again.

But he held her anyway. Tighter than before. She let him. Her head stayed on his shoulder. Neither of them turned on the TV. The bowls of cold mac and cheese stayed on the table. They did not matter anymore.
