It doesn't take all week to hear back from the nurse trainees' placement departments. The head of Occupational Therapy calls you in for a conference.

"Plus if any of my therapists get the idea it's tolerated, they could complain to me for not maintaining a professional workplace. Especially if there might be, what is it, hooking up at work. Jennifer and Kelly have more cheerful news. Jeannie Goodchild took them personally in hand and was candid about Labor and Delivery being basically lesbian-run.

"She had us give each other enemas," Jennifer says. She's the taller one of the pair, with a Eurasian cast to her features. "It was actually kind of fun."

"This is going to be a longer talk, I can tell," you tell Anna. "Let's go somewhere we can get more comfortable chairs." You stand up from the plastic bucket seat, the round steel glides sliding back on the tile floor. "I'll buy you lunch."

After an hour and a half, you finally get some sense that Anna is picking up on the interaction between the hierarchy of the team and the guidelines. She's not thrilled in having to bite her tongue over her superiors' sloppiness, but she starts nodding along when you give her scenarios.

"All right," she says, "So that's when I'd speak up?"

"Or get the attention of the senior nurse," you say. "As a trainee, your status is not quite 'stand back and shut up', but some doctors will treat you that way."

The ice-cool, petite blonde looks at you and nods. Now that her trouble with the Emergency doctors has been teased out, analyzed, and dissected, she seems at ease.
