Chapter 21 by fyreant fyreant

Do a little novice-heroine-team-up with Dr. Rainbow?

Of course! [End of issue]

Standing there thinking for a moment, you weigh your options. You aren't writing Green Streak off completely, but you certainly don't want to have to spend a whole patrol out with him. Maybe if he ACTUALLY came to your rescue against a threat that demanded an A-class, then you would actually touch his dick. If a little finger-banging show was enough to cause him to make a mess of his speedo, you didn't have high hopes for the actual event.

On the contrary, even though you had felt contempt towards her when you first met, you were taking a shine to this goofy, colorful girl that Green Streak seemed to have picked out as a fellow target for harassment. You were finding her fun to be around, and your abilities complemented one another nicely.

Come to think of it - her theme was rainbows, and yours was songbirds. One of those was light, one of them was sound. One of you has street smarts, the other book learning. You didn't want to get ahead of yourself, and would have to see how it worked out, but... this COULD be the beginning of a dynamic duo.

You had always hated, HATED the idea of being a sidekick for an established hero, and the idea of ever taking one of your own on was depressing, too. Either way, it was all about talking down to somebody, or getting talked down to. But two peers, with contrasting powers and personalities?

"I thought you'd never ask." you tell Dr. Rainbow coolly. She applauded happily and hugged you tighter. You were still not quite sure just how innocent or flirtatious all of these gestures of affection really were, with her. If she really was a medical doctor, she had to be at least 26 years old, didn't she? So she was two years your senior at a minimum. Yet at the same time, what with her acting like a sheltered teenager, you felt like she'd need somebody steering her away from the worst of Acropolis City's sometimes dark sexuality (the fact that bringing Doc out with you on patrols of the mean streets surrounding your hideout amounted to steering how towards it didn't cross your mind).

"Let's go back down to the first floor and make sure we each know our partner's strengths and weaknesses. I mean, if your magic wand gets knocked out of your hands by some baddie, I need to know if it's going to transform me into a pigeon if I try and grab it to toss it back to you. Also you'll be hearing me whispering in your ear a lot and throwing my voice while barely moving my lips."

The other heroine's eyes went wide (you were just now noticing that the color of her irises was continuously changing, cycling through all the colors of her namesake) and she made a swooning face, her upper body going limp against you and pressing her cheek up against yours. "Oh Miss Nightingale, you're so cool~! I wouldn't even know to prepare for things like that. I was just noticing that your physical fitness is at championship-athlete levels, even more so than most heroines, and yet your body is so smooth and lithe! You must be a genius at training, too!"

"Um, you see," Dr. Rainbow blushes and pulls away from you, folding her hands at her waist coquettishly, "I don't actually know how to fight. I've never thrown a punch in my life, or ever wanted to! When I use the Spectrasceptre - oh, that's what you called my 'wand', but I don't mind if friends call it that if they want to, heehee ~ to fight evil, it's only because there is no other choice, and I can heal anyone who gets really hurt. It's been tough making it. Just the other day, a mean lady in a lizard costume ambushed me and did some icky things to me... oh, and my very first day a week ago, a mugger snatched my wand away, and to get it back I had to-"

"I get the idea." you say, pressing your finger against her lips with a titter. "I myself had some difficulty getting overwhelmed by a group that your powers would have been able to neutralize much more efficiently, even though I was a match for any two of them at once. Do you have any kind of ride?"

"Ride?" The teal-haired girl blinks at you blankly. "Ohh! You mean like a car? I'm afraid not, I always use public transportation when I'm not being Dr. Rainbow, and while I'm transformed, I can just ride the rainbow wherever I need to go!" she poses again; she's good at that part of being a hero, at least.

Hmm. You would have to see that in more detail. Normally, being transported into action being carried or given a ride by another hero was seen as demeaning... but you were sure she wouldn't mind. "Well, that's a little too flashy for standard patrol - you'll scare off anybody who isn't confident enough to take you on. The owl doesn't screech until she already has her prey in her sights, hmhmhmmm... Why don't you grab yourself a helmet from the garage and hop on the back of my bike? The sun will be going down in a couple of hours, and criminals will be getting their schemes rolling. Are you ready for a patrol that could get dangerous? I'm waiting for a group of five (or maybe four) well-equipped poker-themed villains to tip their hand."'

"I'll do it!" Doc says, her face suddenly passionate, raising a fist defiantly. "For justice and friendship, I won't give up until the disease of evil is cured from this city!"
