Chapter 9

Is Greg home?
Nope
The windows were dark as you both stepped out of the car, and you unlocked the door as Aimee stepped up behind you. You ushered her into the living room and checked the time. It was around 4 pm, so you figured Greg wouldn't be home for a couple hours.
You turned to Aimee, "Alright! I want to get some things unpacked before Greg gets home, so he can see that he isn't in this alone."
She nodded, her face an obnoxiously adorable mixture of seriousness and excitement. "Sounds good! Where should we start?"
You looked around, spotting some boxes near the garage door you'd marked 'long term storage.'
"There!" You scooped up a couple boxes, but the garage in this house was too small for holding much besides your car. You put the boxes back down and chewed a knuckle, wondering what to do, then grabbed one of the cookies Aimee had brought earlier. "We need to get these out of the way... Any ideas?"
"How about the wine cellar?" Aimee grabbed a cookie as well. "We could split a bottle too, if you have any." She winked at you, but you were already staring at her.
"Wine cellar? I don't think we have one..." You trailed off as Aimee walked into the kitchen, and you followed her silently. She shifted a few boxes near the corner, revealing a narrow door you hadn't known was there.
"Carli's place has the same floor plan," she said, munching her cookie, "It's not huge, but might work!" Her eyes grew round as she continued, "I wonder what's down there!"
You were curious, too. Besides the boxes, the door had been hidden by a curtain that divided the kitchen and entry way; Greg probably didn't know about it either.
For some reason you were a bit worried about going down there. It felt secret, dangerous. You shrugged off the thought and switched your phone's flashlight on, resolute. "Let's check it out."
The door opened without objection and creaked ominously, revealing a narrow staircase below the living room. You followed it down, phone aloft for light and your free hand on the railing. Aimee followed close behind, her breathing fast against the back of your neck.
The room was bigger than you'd thought, maybe twenty feet squared, and had apparently been ignored by the movers. Dusty furniture lay here and there, and a small office area was set up in the far corner. Behind your Aimee made an excited sound, then ran past you to a wine rack set against a wall.
"Oooh there's some good stuff here!" She said, easing a bottle from the rack. "Also dust."
You giggled, feeling a bit lightheaded for some reason, and considered your options. There was plenty of room down here for storage, but also a mystery. Part of you wanted to check out the office area, but another part urged you to go back upstairs with Aimee and enjoy that wine. The dusty files were curious, but definitely not as much fun.
After chewing your lip a bit over it, you made your decision.
What was it?
