Chapter 8

Is she hurt?
No.
"No...I think I'm okay." Melody responds as you help her to her feet. Her worried eyes suddenly look you over. "How about you?You didn't get hurt, did you?"
"I'm fine." You assure her. "A little sore from the fall, but nothing serious."
"Good." Melody exhales. She looks up at the cliff you two just tumbled down. "Shit. Look how sheer that cliff face is. There is no way we can climb back up."
"I guess we'll have to walk around and see if we can return to the slopes." You agree.
"I am so sorry about this, Jack." She sighs. "I should have listened."
"It's okay." You respond. "We're both safe and that's what matters."
"I shouldn't have dragged you into this. You could have been seriously hurt!" She shook her head. "I shouldn't have called you over to me. It was so stupid!"
"What was I supposed to do, let you fall?" You ask incredulously. "Melody, I would have come after you no matter what you said to me."
"Yeah...you would, wouldn't you?" She half-smiles. "C'mon, let's grab our poles and hike down the mountain. We'll have to leave our splintered skiis here."
You agree and the two of you head down the slope in front of you. It seems to follow the ski trails, but thick patches of forest disorient you and you're not sure what direction you're going other than down.
Eventually, you reach a large, frozen lake. You tap it carefully with your pole.
"Is it sturdy?" Melody inquires, watching you.
"Seems so. But I can't be sure."
"Should we walk around or go through the middle?" She asks.
Around the lake or through the middle?
