Chapter 9
by Myocastor_Coypus
Do you attempt to go inside?
No
You have an unpleasant gut feeling. As you stare at the doors you feel as if something is pushing you away from them, pushing into your stomach. You almost want to throw up. You turn your back on the building. Unfortunately this only lessens the malaise for a short time. Soon you feel it again, but you can't place it this time. You can't identify any one thing that puts you off. It could be that you have not seen a single living soul since going to sleep, and that you slept so long. It could be the weather, rain is always somewhat unpleasant, and today it is pissing down in gallons. Your body is fine for now, the wool of your coat is thick and warm, but your hoodie is nearing the limit of its ability to hold water out, and your head is cooling rapidly. Soon it will be damp on your skull as well. All of these things could account for a viscerall discomfort. But that explanation doesn't satisfy you. You feel there's something else.
There is something else. The rain is feeling heavier and heavier by the minute. Soon the impacts on your head will actively hurt. Something is making it harder to breath. Your body is under pressure, especially around your thorax. There's a ringing in your ears over the pattering rainfall. You feel like someone is progressively loading heavier and heavier weights onto your bones to have them tear out of your flesh.
Your knees give away and you crumble forward. You stop yourself with your hands and end up on all fours. Your back is being pelted by tennis ball sized globs of liquid, a liquid growing more and more viscous each second. Each breath is a losing battle. You start to see void blotches in your vision.
On the brink of passing out, you articulate your last **** cry, and scream.
"Stop!"
Silence. And then you inhale sharply. You froze time. You don't move for a few moments. You stay on your knees, and try to take stock of any damage. You breath in and out, as deeply as you can manage. No particular pain, no broken ribs. Your head is throbbing at the temples, but other than that all seems fine. You move your arms a little, and find nothing wrong there either. Nightmare's over, time to rise.
Or is it? As you lift your right side and plant your foot on the ground you immediately feel a tremor go through your toes and up your leg into the rest of you. The ground shakes. A low vibration quickly grows into a great rumbling roar. From all around you hear shattering glass, first faraway, then closer and closer. You hear a sound that can only be crumbling rubble rolling toward you, and then, every building, every little man-made or solid protruding object on the ground explodes around you. A searing pain in your abdomen flares up as a sharp object buries itself in your flesh. A split second later something else strikes the side of your head and you black out.
Where do you wake?
