Chapter 15 by Cloontang1 Cloontang1

Does she stop?

No

Sarah doesn't even look back at you, she gets into her car and drives away from your house. You collapse in your doorway, tears streaming down your face. You spend the rest of the day drinking and calling Katherine's phone. Every call goes straight to voicemail. You pass out on the couch sometime around the 30th attempt.

You head into work late, with your head pounding from your hangover. When you get there, you find that Bridgette had requested a new partner. The other officers act colder towards you, leaving you to wonder how much they know about the situation.

Several days go by with no contact with Katherine. Every night, you fall asleep in front of the TV, bottle in hand. The next time you see Katherine, she gives you the divorce papers. You try to plead with her, but she simply ignores you. The divorce is swift, and you end up losing the house. You move in to a crappy apartment several blocks away, it's all you can afford. Your family tries to contact you, but you shut them out. Weeks go by, and you only leave your apartment for work or to get fast food.

You're assigned a new partner at work, a rookie, just out of college. Her name is Caroline Ward. You quickly find out that she has wanted to be a cop since she was a kid. She's eager to help people, and she has an incredible passion for her work. Her optimistic personality is contagious, and you find yourself smiling for the first time since Katherine left. You find comfort in your friendship with Caroline, and look forward to work everyday. You find yourself opening up to her. You tell her about what happened to your marriage. You tell her the truth about your infidelity, but leave out Bridgette's name.

"And now you're punishing yourself for it," Caroline says when you finish.

"What else can I do?"

"What you did was inexcusable," she begins, "but it happened. You can't take it back. You should learn from it, use the experience to make yourself a better man. You acknowledge what you did was wrong, so focus on that. You can change, everyone can. Moping around isn't going to do anything, just keep you miserable."

You can see what she means. You thank her for the advice and tell her you're going to follow it. You're going to live more positively.

How does it go?
